2026 NECC Nationals Recap: OW Red Wins Carthage Esports’ First National Championship

KENOSHA – On Saturday, May 16, Carthage Esports concluded its 2025-26 competitive year. Six teams competed in the 2026 National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) Nationals. Overwatch (OW) Red made history by becoming the first-ever Carthage Esports national champions.

NECC Nationals Explanation

Following the conclusion of the Fall and Spring semesters within a competitive year, the NECC conducts the National Championships for each of its nine divisions. This event serves as the final championship tournament for collegiate esports programs across North America. It identifies the official season champions across various gaming titles and skill tiers within each division.

2026 NECC Nationals Recap – No. 1 Overwatch Red Division III Champions

Carthage OW Red, featuring junior captain Mason Stenger (zXc), junior Joy Schultz (JumpyWizard), sophomore Billy Flanagan (ChickenFries), sophomore Deacon Kirvan (FerociousPig), and sophomore Adam Hollis (Hollister09), capped off their 2025-26 academic stretch with an NECC Division III Overwatch National Championship on Friday, May 8.

Overwatch Game Explanation

Overwatch is a free-to-play hero shooter in which players choose from a variety of heroes equipped with special abilities that are attached to specified roles (Tank, Damage, or Support) to complete objectives across multiple game modes such as Control, Escort, Flashpoint, Hybrid, and Push. This game title emphasizes teamwork and strategic coordination.

Throughout Fall 2025 and Spring 2026, Carthage Overwatch Red maintained an undefeated 13-0 Overall and 39-0 Map Record in regular-season competition. Additionally, the team captured conference titles in both semesters – Fall 2025: Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Division IV and Spring 2026: Wright State in Division III. Across the best-of-seven matches, OW Red dropped only one map in total, ending 4-1 vs. MTSU, and swept Wright State 4-0. Ultimately, they produced the most successful academic year in Carthage Esports history.

Because Carthage OW Red secured at least one NECC conference title across the 2025-26 academic year, they secured an automatic Nationals bid and clinched the No. 1 seed. OW Red began their NECC Division III Nationals run on Friday, April 24, one week after their first-ever Spring 2026 NECC conference title win. Every match utilized a best-of-five format except the Grand Final, which was a best-of-seven series.

Brief Game Mode Explanations

  • Control involves two teams competing to capture a point from 0% to 100% in a best-of-three format. To win the map, a team must secure two out of three points.
  • Escort: Two teams take turns moving and defending a payload objective. On attack, the goal is to advance the payload through checkpoints within a time limit. The defensive objective is to prevent the payload from advancing. Lastly, both teams alternate between attacking and defending.
  • Flashpoint is similar to Control, but two teams aim to hold three of five objectives for a shorter duration. These objectives are spread throughout the map and alternate as the game progresses.
  • Hybrid combines elements of Control and Escort, where the attacking team must fully capture a point to unlock and escort a payload. Defenders attempt to stall progress. Both teams alternate once between attacking and defending. Points are determined by unlocking the payload and how many checkpoints are passed before the timer runs out.
  • Push involves two teams competing to guide a robot across multiple checkpoints. The winning team is determined by the robot's meter distance over 10 minutes.
In the Round of 16, OW Red battled No. 16 Missouri State University (MSU) Bears in a best-of-five series on Friday, April 24. The result was a 3-1 victory after a tough Map One loss in Illios Control. To follow up, Carthage OW Red earned a dominant 115-39m Esperança Push victory in Map Two. Next, Stenger wiped out MSU's defenders in Midtown Hybrid to help his team secure a 2-1 Map Three victory. Lastly, OW Red remained defiant and produced a 3-1 Map Four win in Aatlis Flashpoint.

Next, Carthage OW Red subsequently competed in the Elite Eight and Final Four on Friday, May 1. This schedule change occurred because the team had arrived early at the UW-Stout Esports Arena in preparation for the Spring 2026 Wisconsin Esports Conference (WEC) State Championship LAN, which took place on Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3.

In the Elite Eight, OW Red defeated No. 9 Florida Polytechnic Phoenixes 3-1. They started strong with a narrow 2-1 win at Lijiang Tower Control. In Map Two, OW Red won 1-0 at Watchpoint: Gibraltar Escort, limiting the Phoenixes' offense to halfway to the initial checkpoint. Carthage OW Red then won a teamfight, pushing the payload past a tunnel and ahead of Florida. On Map Three, Flanagan (Ramattra) helped secure a 2-1 Midtown Hybrid victory after using his "Annihilation" ability to turn Ramattra into a melee damage dealer, helping Carthage surpass Florida in distance. The series ended with Carthage OW Red winning 3-0 in Aatlis Flashpoint for Map Four.

Next, Carthage OW Red battled No. 4 St. Ambrose University Bees in a Final Four series. OW Red etched a 3-1 series win after succumbing to the Bees' tenacious playstyle in Map One. St. Ambrose secured Map One with a 2-1 Lijiang Tower Control victory thanks to a late-round teamfight. However, OW Red responded with a 2-1 Watchpoint Gibraltar Escort victory, where Kirvan (Venture) used "Tectonic Shock" to eliminate two defenders. This helped OW Red surpass St. Ambrose in total distance traveled down the stretch. In Map Three, OW Red won 3-2 on Aatlis Flashpoint. Lastly, in Map Four, OW Red conquered St. Ambrose with a definitive 140-42m Colosseo Push win.

After playing through two back-to-back matches, OW Red was granted a one-week break from NECC Division III Nationals. On Friday, May 8, the moment finally arrived. Historically, this became the second time Carthage OW Red had reached the Grand Final in NECC Overwatch Nationals. On May 7, 2025, they battled Grand Canyon University [GCU] in the Division IV Nationals Grand Final and fell short 4-2 within a best-of-seven series.

However, in 2026, Carthage OW Red changed the narrative and won a dramatic 4-3 series vs. No. 3 Paradise Valley Community College [PVCC] Pumas. These game mode/map combinations were played: Ilios – Control (2-1 PVCC win), Watchpoint Gibraltar – Escort (5-4 Carthage OT win), Blizzard World – Hybrid (1-0 Carthage), New Junk City – Flashpoint (3-2 PVCC win), Esperança – Push (Carthage win), Lijiang Tower – Control (2-0 PVCC win), and Colosseo – Push (109-89m Carthage win). Overall, this series was a hard-fought battle between the top two teams in NECC Division III across North America. It also cemented OW Red's place in Carthage Esports history.

The final moments of this mesmerizing series can be seen here:

Season Comments: Mason Stenger – OW Red Captain

"This Nationals proves the amount of work I put into the game Overwatch as a player. After competing for more than seven years, a national title, especially the first in program history, is a huge achievement that I did not expect when arriving at Carthage. I knew that our teams were good and consistently competed. However, when we came up short in the Division IV Nationals last year, I know that if I could improve on my shortcomings as a player, I could help drive the push toward that first national championship. To win it while being in a higher division is an even better reward for the work not only I have put in, but the team as a whole."

Carthage Overwatch Red has entered the offseason, where they will enjoy a peaceful break before returning for the Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 competitive seasons. Once again, we congratulate them for making history by becoming the first-ever Carthage Esports National Champions.

2026 NECC Nationals Recap – Rocket League Red Division I – Round Robin Group B

Carthage RL Red, featuring senior captain Alex Vaile (Vaile), freshman Owen Perry (Kor), and freshman Kyle Branski (xray), finished their 2025-26 academic year by competing in the NECC Division I Nationals Tournament in San Antonio, Texas, between Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16. Although the team was eliminated in the Group Stage, it does not take away from their historic year.
(Rocket League Game Explanation)

Rocket League (RL) is a vehicular soccer video game in which players drive rocket-powered cars to hit a giant ball into the opposing team's goal. Blending arcade-style sports with high-speed, physics-based driving, it features online multiplayer, competitive ranked seasons, and deep mechanical gameplay. NECC RL includes three-on-three matches that switch between best-of-five and best-of-seven formats depending on division.

Throughout Fall 2025 and Spring 2026, Carthage RL Red combined for a 7-7 Overall and 39-33 Game Record in regular-season action. In Fall 2025 specifically, RL Red (6-1, 27-9) competed in NECC Division II, achieved first place in the West-Central A Stage, clinched the No. 1 seed, reached the Grand Final against Davenport University Red, and earned silver honors.

Then, on Wednesday, Jan. 28, RL Red became the first-ever Carthage Esports team to reach NECC Division I by defeating Brewton-Parker Christian (BCP) University in a promotion match before the Spring 2026 season began. Although the Firebirds ultimately concluded their Spring 2026 campaign with a 1-6 Overall and 12-24 Game Record, they remained competitive throughout all their matches.

The season's highlight came in Week Seven on Senior Night vs. Cleveland State. Branski, Perry, and Vaile showed out and secured Carthage Esports' first-ever NECC Division I regular-season win.
Although RL Red missed the NECC Division I playoffs, they still had a great resume. It included the aforementioned second-place in the Fall 2025 Division II West-Central Grand Final and promotion to Division I before the Spring 2026 season. The NECC commended the team's efforts and rewarded them with an invitation to San Antonio, Texas, for the NECC Division I Nationals Tournament.

At the event, RL Red competed in Round Robin Group B to see how they measured against some of the best NECC Division I teams across North America, which included: Akron Zips Gold (5-2, 23-14), Oklahoma Christian [OC] University Eagles (4-3, 22-14), and Kennesaw State Premier (3-4, 16-20).

On Friday, May 15, RL Red faced Akron Zips Gold and OC University Eagles. Unfortunately, the team lost 4-1 against the Zips and were swept 4-0 by the Eagles.

On Saturday, May 16, RL Red faced Kennesaw State Premier. The team started strong with a 2-0 lead. However, Kennesaw went on to win the next four games, earning a 4-2 series victory. In the end, RL Red finished 0-3 Overall with a 3-12 Game Record in the NECC Division I Round Robin Group B Stage.

We extend our congratulations to RL Red for a historic 2025-26 academic year in NECC and express our gratitude to Branski, Perry, and Vaile, whose contributions will be remembered. In particular, we want to congratulate Vaile on an incredible four-year career at Carthage Esports. We wish him continued success in his future endeavors as he turns the page toward a new chapter in life.

Carthage RL Red has entered the offseason, where they will enjoy a peaceful break before returning for the Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 competitive seasons. Once again, we congratulate them for making history by becoming the first-ever Carthage Esports team to reach an NECC Division I standing.

2026 NECC Nationals Recap – No. 5 Valorant Division VI – Top Eight

Carthage Valorant, featuring junior captain Sergio Musaitef (Gio), junior Aiden Hecht (Hecht), senior Mady Savage (Bunny), sophomore Ryan Rivera (Righreanden), freshman Charlie Post (Opt1mal), and freshman Thalia Sullivan (Jellyfish), concluded their Spring 2026 NECC season with a Top Eight placement in the NECC Division VI Nationals on Tuesday, April 21.
(Valorant Game Explanation)

Valorant is a five-vs-five tactical First-Person Shooter (FPS) in which two teams alternate between attacking and defending bomb sites, similar to Rainbow Six Siege but more traditional, with a focus on precise gunplay and agent abilities on mostly static maps. Teams play best-of-three matches in NECC, aiming for 13 round wins to secure a "Map victory," with the process repeating until one team wins two maps. Rounds are won by eliminating the enemy team before planting the spike or by planting and defending it, with defenders also able to defuse the spike by eliminating attackers.

Throughout Spring 2026, Carthage Valorant achieved a 5-1 Overall and 11-3 Map Record in their Division VI Midwest A regular-season campaign. With those statistics, the Firebirds were awarded the No. 3 seed in the Division VI Midwest playoffs because conference rival, Minot State Red (5-1, 11-3) possessed an early-season head-to-head win, and Drury University (6-0, 12-4) had the best record overall between the two Division VI conferences.

In the Division VI Midwest Playoffs, Carthage Valorant defeated No. 6 Governors State University (GSU) Jaguars in the Quarterfinal (2-0 sweep on Monday, March 23), No. 2 Drury University Panthers in the Semifinal (2-0 sweep on Monday, March 30), and No. 5 Cornell College Rams in the Grand Final (3-0 sweep on Monday, April 13).

Overall, Carthage Valorant did not drop a single map in their playoff run, which is a testament to their hard work and discipline as a team. As their Spring 2026 season concluded, the team earned its second consecutive NECC Valorant Championship, dating back to April 7, 2025, when they beat Robert Morris University, 3-2, to capture the Spring 2025 Division VII Midwest Championship. Thanks to its Spring 2026 Division VI Midwest Championship victory, Carthage Valorant secured an automatic bid into Division VI Nationals, where they obtained the No. 5 seed.

In the Round of 16, the Firebirds faced No. 12 College of the Holy Cross [CHC] Crusaders on Monday, April 20. The result was a series victory with a 2-0 score, including a 13-5 win on Haven in Map One and a 13-1 win on Split in Map Two. Overall, Post had a massive impact on this series as he finished with 31 Kills / 12 Deaths [2.58 K/D] with 13 Assists, and 10 Spike Plants. Additionally, Rivera went 34 Kills / 15 Deaths [2.27 K/D] with Five Assists and Four Spike Defuses.

Next, Carthage Valorant advanced to the Elite Eight and took on No. 4 Lander University Bearcats Academy. Unfortunately, the Firebirds suffered a 2-0 series loss, featuring a 13-11 loss on Breeze in Map One and a 13-11 loss on Bind in Map Two. Despite the series loss, Rivera remained consistent as he went 42 Kills / 32 Deaths [1.31 K/D] with 12 Assists, Five Spike Plants, and Three Spike Defuses.

Spring 2026 NECC Nationals Player Statistics – Carthage Valorant Varsity

  • Ryan Rivera (Righreanden)

    • 76 Kills / 47 Deaths [1.62 K/D], 17 Assists, Five Spike Plants, Seven Spike Defuses

  • Charlie Post (Opt1mal)

    • 65 Kills / 47 Deaths [1.38 K/D], 28 Assists, 15 Spike Plants, Two Spike Defuses

  • Thalia Sullivan (Jellyfish)

Carthage Valorant has entered the offseason, where they will enjoy a peaceful break before returning for the Spring 2027 competitive season. We wish to congratulate the team for its Spring 2026 Division VI Midwest Championship victory over the Cornell College Rams.

2026 NECC Nationals Recap – No. 5 Rocket League Black Division III – Top 16

Carthage RL Black, featuring junior captain Penn Gilchrist (Pixlr), junior Lucas Menzer (Joystik), and senior Tanner Lee (Flare), concluded their 2025-26 academic year with a Top 16 placement in the NECC Division III Nationals on Wednesday, April 22.

Throughout Fall 2025 and Spring 2026, Carthage RL Black compiled a 13-0 Overall and 52-11 Game Record in regular-season action. In Fall 2025, RL Black (6-0, 24-1) dominated the Division IV Midwest A Stage, finishing first and earning the No. 1 seed for the Division IV Midwest Playoffs. Their run included a 4-2 Quarterfinal victory over No. 8 Carthage RL White, a 4-3 Semifinal loss to No. 4 Minnesota State Mavericks, and a 4-1 victory over No. 2 Indiana Wesleyan University, finishing third overall.

In Spring 2026, RL Black (7-0, 28-10) moved up to Division III, decimated their Midwest B competition, and finished first. As a result, they locked up the No. 2 seed. This occurred because Indiana Tech Warriors B were in Midwest A, a higher-ranked conference, and had a 28-6 Game Differential coupled with a 7-0 Overall Record. Within the Division III Midwest Playoffs, RL Black posted the following results: 4-2 Quarterfinal victory vs. No. 7 Durham College Lords Esports on Wednesday, April 1, 4-1 Semifinal victory vs. No. 6 Central Methodist University [CMU] Eagles on Wednesday, April 8, and a 4-0 Grand Final loss vs. No. 1 Indiana Tech Warriors B on Wednesday, April 15.

Although RL Black did not win an NECC conference championship, they remained consistent, achieving podium placements: third place in Fall 2025 and second place in Spring 2026. With this resume, the team accumulated more than enough points to clinch a spot in the NECC Division III Nationals. Before the competition started, RL Black was awarded the No. 5 seed.

RL Black's Nationals run began on Wednesday, April 22, and unfortunately ended on the same night. The Firebirds faced No. 12 University of Southern Indiana [USI] Red and suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 series loss. The series came down to a cinematic Game Seven that featured a 3-3 overtime to settle the score.

Before that, Gilchrist scored two crucial goals to help build a lead, while Lee added one of his own. However, late hiccups on defense kept USI Red in Game Seven. At the +1:03 overtime mark, Menzer attempted to clear the ball from the right corner of Carthage's crossbar. However, he inadvertently backflipped the ball into the air, granting USI's DanertheGamer sufficient opportunity to seize the moment, as Gilchrist and Lee were expecting Menzer's clear to extend the period.

Spring 2026 NECC Nationals Player Statistics – Carthage RL Black

  • Tanner Lee (Flare): Six Goals, Two Assists, Eight Saves, 19 Shots, Nine Demos, 32% Shooting

  • Penn Gilchrist (Pixlr): Five Goals, Four Assists, Seven Saves, 23 Shots, Seven Demos, 22% Shooting

  • Lucas Menzer (Joystik): Five Goals, Four Assists, 13 Saves, 25 Shots, 11 Demos, 20% Shooting

A tough loss at the Division III Nationals does not take away from the consistent performance RL Black showcased throughout the 2025-26 academic year. We extend our congratulations to Gilchrist, Lee, and Menzer for their outstanding contributions. We also want to thank Tanner Lee for unconditionally giving his all to Carthage Esports for the better part of four years. Lee is a pioneer of this program who has touched the lives of many who have entered after him. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

Carthage RL Black has entered the offseason, where they will enjoy a peaceful break before returning for the Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 competitive seasons. Once again, we congratulate them for their second and third-place podium appearances in the 2025-26 academic year.

2026 NECC Nationals Recap – No. 11 Rocket League White Division IV – Top Eight

Carthage RL White, featuring senior captain TJ Buchmann (Blasecupid), sophomore Kaliek Wade (Akko), and freshman Jimmy Prims (ItsSlurp17), exited the 2025-26 academic year with a Top Eight placement in the NECC Division IV Nationals on Wednesday, April 24.

Throughout Fall 2025 and Spring 2026, Carthage RL White compiled a 9-4 Overall and 38-21 Game Record in regular-season matches. In Fall 2025, RL White (3-3, 13-15) finished fourth-place in the Division IV Midwest A conference. As a result, the team was awarded the No. 8 seed. However, their playoff run was brief when No. 1 Carthage RL Black defeated them 4-2 in the Quarterfinal.
In Spring 2026, RL White (6-1, 25-6) remained in Division IV, but drastically improved its regular-season performance. With a 6-1 Overall and 25-6 Game Record, the Firebirds took first place in Division IV Central A and secured a No. 1 seed for the Division IV Central Playoffs. However, RL White suffered another early postseason setback as No. 8 Kansas State University [KSU] JV earned a 4-2 upset win in the Quarterfinal.

Although RL White experienced two brief and emotionally challenging postseason campaigns, they accumulated enough points to qualify for the Division IV Nationals, where they received the No. 11 seed. Unlike Fall 2025 and Spring 2026, RL White reached the second round to avoid another one-and-done scenario.

In the Round of 16, RL White competed against No. 6 Champlain College Beavers and earned a gritty 4-3 series win on Wednesday, April 22. Buchmann headlined the series with the following stat line: 14 Goals, Three Assists, 17 Saves, 23 Shots, and 13 Demos while shooting 61% from the virtual soccer field. In Game Seven alone, three goals were scored, and RL White secured a 4-0 victory when the series was tied at 3-3. Prims and Wade combined for Eight Goals and 15 Assists, which helped complement Buchmann's aggressive pursuit.

Next in the Elite Eight, RL White faced No. 3 Minnesota State Mavericks and suffered an unfortunate 4-2 series loss on Friday, April 24. At one point, the Firebirds possessed a 2-1 series lead, which included a Game One overtime victory. However, the Mavericks went on to outscore RL White 11-4 across Games Four, Five, and Six. This included a 6-1 victory in Game Five and a 4-3 victory in Game Six, thereby securing their place in the Final Four. Despite the loss, Buchmann pieced together a solid stat line, finishing with Five Goals, One Assist, Nine Saves, 15 Shots, and Six Demos while shooting 33% from the virtual soccer field. Prims and Wade combined for Six Goals and Nine Assists.
Spring 2026 NECC Nationals Player Statistics – Carthage RL White

  • TJ Buchmann (Blasecupid): 19 Goals, Four Assists, 26 Saves, 38 Shots, 19 Demos, 50% Shooting

  • Jimmy Prims (ItsSlurp17): Nine Goals, 13 Assists, 22 Saves, 31 Shots, 11 Demos, 29% Shooting

  • Kaliek Wade (Akko): Five Goals, 11 Assists, 33 Saves, 31 Shots, 17 Demos, 16% Shooting

Even though RL White was dealt an unfortunate hand in the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 playoffs, the team still showcased greatness in NECC and other leagues, such as the WEC, where they placed within the Top Eight in the Fall 2025 WEC RL State Championship LAN, and secured second-place in the Spring 2026 Midwest Collegiate Rocket League (MCRL) Division II Championship LAN.
We extend our congratulations to Buchmann, Prims, and Wade for their tremendous contributions throughout the 2025-26 academic year. Lastly, we wish to congratulate TJ Buchmann on his illustrious three-year career at Carthage Esports, filled with unwavering enthusiasm and supportive leadership. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.
Carthage RL White has entered the offseason, where they will enjoy a peaceful break. Once again, we congratulate them for their Top Eight placement within the NECC Division IV Nationals.

2026 NECC Nationals Recap – No. 13 Overwatch Black Division VIII – Top Eight

Carthage OW Black, featuring junior captain Ethan Anderson (Snowstorm), sophomore Ryan Rivera (Righreanden), freshman Chris Duffey (Lithecash), Alek Miech (Stewie), and Jena Pillman (Jenny), finished their 2025-26 academic year with a Top Eight placement in the NECC Division VIII Nationals.

Throughout Fall 2025 and Spring 2026, Carthage OW Black compiled a 7-6 Overall and a 24-18 Map Record in regular-season action. In Fall 2025 (3-3, 11-9), the team finished fourth-place in the Division IX Central A Stage. As a result, they secured a spot in the Division IX Central Playoffs after sweeping Northern Illinois University (NIU) 3-0 in Week Seven, with Kaliek Wade (Akko) stepping in as a substitute Support and contributing to the team's victory.

However, their Fall 2025 playoff run ended in the Quarterfinal, as they lost 3-1 to No. 2 Evansville University Aces. The series started with a 2-1 Ilios Control win for the Aces. Then, OW Black clutched up in King's Row Hybrid to secure a 4-3 overtime win and tie the series 1-1. In Maps Three and Four, Evansville overpowered Carthage with superior Tank gameplay in Suravasa Flaspoint (3-0 win) and Rialto Escort (95-94m).

In Spring 2026 (4-3, 13-9), OW Black moved up to Division VIII and finished fourth in the East B Stage. That placement secured the team's spot in the Division VIII East Playoffs and earned the No. 8 seed. Once again, though, OW Black fell short in the Quarterfinal. This time to No. 1 Edinboro University Fighting Scots. It was an unfortunate 3-0 sweep as Edinboro secured wins on Lijiang Tower Control (2-0), Midtown Hybrid (1-0), and Colosseo Push.

Despite their early playoff exits, OW Black accumulated enough points to secure a spot in the Division VIII Nationals and was awarded the No. 13 seed. In the Round of 16, OW Black scored a forfeit win from the University of Illinois – Springfield (UIS) on Friday, April 24.

Then, in the Elite Eight, OW Black faced No. 12 Fresno Pacific University (FPC) on Friday, May 1. Unfortunately, OW Black was swept 3-0 by FPC, who reigned victorious in the following game mode/map combinations: Busan Control (2-0), Shambali Monastery Escort (1-0), and Eichenwalde Hybrid (2-1).

Although OW Black experienced brief playoff appearances, Anderson played a pivotal role in guiding the new freshman recruits to significant achievements, thereby facilitating their development as players. It will be interesting to see where this team composition goes in the 2026-27 academic year. Carthage OW Black has entered the offseason, where they will enjoy a peaceful break. We extend our congratulations to them for making the playoffs in back-to-back semesters within the 2025-26 academic year.

As the 2025-26 competitive year closes, we wish to congratulate every single team for their success. Whether they won championships or simply showed massive improvement throughout the year, every single team represented Carthage Esports well, and we are incredibly grateful.
