Seventh-Inning Surge Not Enough as Baseball Drops 10-7 Decision

KENOSHA — Carthage mounted a late rally but couldn't overcome an early deficit, falling 10-7 to Marian (Wis.) after the Sabres built a six-run lead through two innings. The Firebirds scored five times in the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but a fly out ended the comeback bid.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Marian (Wis.) 10 - Carthage 7
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Augie Schmidt Field
  • Records: Marian (Wis.) 8-12, Carthage 7-15
How it Happened
  • Marian wasted little time getting on the board in the first inning, using a pair of RBI plays to take a 2-0 lead. An RBI groundout opened the scoring before a run-scoring single extended the advantage.
  • The Sabres broke the game open in the second. A bunt single brought in a run to make it 3-0, and aggressive baserunning added another as a steal of home pushed the lead to four. Marian continued to apply pressure with an RBI double and another run-scoring single, stretching the margin to 6-0 before Carthage could record the final out of the inning.
  • Carthage answered in the bottom half of the second. Paul Reedy delivered an RBI single to bring in Caden Meyer and cut the deficit to 6-1.
  • After several quiet innings, Marian added insurance in the fifth with an RBI double to make it 7-1. The Sabres tacked on two more in the seventh, using another RBI double and a wild pitch to extend the lead to 9-1.
  • Carthage mounted its biggest rally in the bottom of the seventh. Jimmy Herget started the surge with a sacrifice fly, and Michael Ossenfort followed with an RBI single. An error allowed another run to score, and Joe Zuleger capped the inning with a two-run single as the Firebirds scored five times to cut the deficit to 9-6.
  • Marian responded with an insurance run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly, pushing the lead to 10-6. Carthage attempted one final comeback in the bottom of the inning, getting an RBI single from Caden Meyer to make it 10-7. The Firebirds had a runner on base but a fly out to the outfield ended the game.
