Carthage 21, Augustana 1
KENOSHA - The Carthage Firebirds women's lacrosse team returned to action on Wednesday afternoon to face the Augustana Vikings in the 2026 CCIW Women's Lacrosse Tournament Semifinals. Controlling the game from the opening draw and scoring seven goals, the Firebirds will advance to the CCIW Championship Tournament Finals.Â
FIRST PERIOD
- Carthage wasted little time getting on the board as Piper LeFevre opened the scoring just 46 seconds into the game off an assist from Kyleigh Higgins. Kelsey O'Brien followed with a goal at the 8:48 mark before Rosie Nolan extended the lead to 3-0 with an assist from LeFevre.
- Augustana answered midway through the quarter at 6:51, but the Firebirds responded with four unanswered goals. O'Brien struck twice more, including a man-up goal assisted by Shannon Heitschmidt, while Auggie Claridge scored back-to-back goals in the final two minutes to give Carthage a commanding 7-1 lead after one period.
SECOND PERIOD
- The Firebirds continued their offensive surge in the second quarter, adding seven more goals. Heitschmidt opened the scoring at 14:09 before assisting Hannah Kim less than two minutes later. Nolan found the back of the net again at 11:05 off another Heitschmidt assist.
- Heitschmidt added a second goal of the afternoon at 9:41 with Claridge earning the assist. Claridge converted on a free-position opportunity at 8:41, while Kim added another free-position goal at 5:53. LeFevre capped the first-half scoring with a goal at 1:37, assisted by Higgins, sending Carthage into halftime with a 14-1 advantage.
THIRD PERIOD
- Carthage stayed aggressive in the third quarter, scoring five more times. Karlie Young opened the frame with a goal at 12:55 off a Higgins assist. Less than two minutes later, Heitschmidt tallied a third goal of the game with Young picking up the assist.
- LeFevre added two more goals in the quarter, scoring at 9:13 and 3:53, while Reggie Ross found the net at 2:01 off an assist from LeFevre. The Firebirds held Augustana scoreless in the quarter and carried a 19-1 lead into the final period.
FOURTH PERIOD
- Claridge recorded a fourth goal of the afternoon at 4:50 with Higgins earning a sixth assist of the contest. Katy Berni closed out the scoring late in the game, finding the back of the net at 1:32 off an assist from Claridge as Carthage secured the 21-1 victory.
- Claridge led all scorers with four goals and two assists.
- LeFevre recorded four goals and two assists.
- Heitschmidt collected three goals and three assists.
- In goal, Xochitl Delvale-Vera recorded one save in goal.
- Carthage recorded 32 total shots and 25 shots on goal.
"Played great team lacrosse today," said head coach Maddie Berni. "Had a lot of different goal scorers on offense. Our defense did a great job holding them. Excited to get the chance to play Saturday again!"
