Firebirds Earn Split Against Wheaton (Ill.) on Saturday

KENOSHA — The Carthage College baseball team built an early five-run lead, but a six-run fifth inning by Carroll (Wis.) proved to be the difference as the Firebirds fell 10-7 on the road.

How it Happened
Game One
  • After a quiet start, Carthage broke through in the third inning. A sacrifice fly brought home the game's first run, giving the Firebirds a 1-0 lead. 
  • Wheaton (Ill.) answered in the fourth with an RBI single to even the score at one, but the tie was short-lived.
  • The Firebirds responded with a decisive fourth inning, erupting for seven runs to take control. A Joe Zuleger solo home run started the surge before a bases-loaded walk pushed across another run. 
  • Carthage continued to capitalize with a two-RBI double from Michael Ossenfort and an RBI single to extend the lead. 
  • Another bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly capped the inning, giving Carthage an 8-1 advantage.
  • Wheaton (Ill.) chipped away in the sixth, scoring three runs to trim the deficit to 8-4. 
  • Carthage countered immediately in the bottom half of the inning, adding two runs on a fielder's choice and an RBI single from Dylan Ston to stretch the lead to 10-4.
  • The Thunder mounted a strong push in the seventh inning, plating five runs to make it a one-run game at 10-9. The rally included a sacrifice fly, an RBI single, a bases-loaded walk, and a two-RBI single, putting pressure on the Firebirds late.
  • Carthage created breathing room in the eighth inning with another Zuleger solo home run, extending the lead to 11-9. 
  • The Firebirds then closed out the final frame following a pickoff at first, and two strikeouts from Santino Pignotti-Wojtak
Game Two
  • The Thunder erupted in the opening inning, scoring six runs on a string of extra-base hits and timely at-bats. A two-RBI double opened the scoring before another RBI double and run-scoring singles extended the lead. A triple and a sacrifice fly capped the inning, giving Wheaton (Ill.) a 6-0 advantage after one.
  • The lead grew to 7-0 in the second on a solo home run, but Carthage answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single from Dawson Gaynor to get on the board.
  • The Firebirds made their biggest push in the fourth inning. A grand slam from Ossenfort to right center brought Carthage within two runs at 7-5, shifting momentum and putting pressure on the visitors.
  • Wheaton (Ill.) responded in the sixth, taking advantage of a run-scoring double play and an RBI single to extend the lead to 9-5. 
  • The Thunder added further insurance in the eighth with a two-run home run, pushing the margin to 11-5.


High Flyers
  • Michael Ossenfort hit two doubles in the contest while Joe Zuleger registered his second and third homers of the season. Ossenfort had four runs batted in during the second game. 
  • Santino Pignotti-Wojtak picked up his second save of the season on the mound, striking out three to close game one. Pignotti-Wojtak added five strikeouts during game two.
