Carroll (Wis.) Rally Spoils Strong Start for Carthage

WAUKESHA — The Carthage College baseball team built an early five-run lead, but a six-run fifth inning by Carroll (Wis.) proved to be the difference as the Firebirds fell 10-7 on the road.

How it Happened
  • The Firebirds opened the scoring in the second inning when Jimmy Herget lined an RBI single to left field, bringing home AJ Gaca for a 1-0 advantage. 
  • Carthage added to its lead in the third as Zander Tubbs connected on a two-run home run to left, scoring Caden Meyer and extending the margin to 3-0.
  • After Carroll (Wis.) plated a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third, Carthage responded in the fourth. Meyer delivered again, this time with an RBI single to score Michael Ossenfort and push the lead to 4-1.
  • Carthage continued its offensive momentum in the fifth inning when Gaca launched a two-run homer to left field, scoring Joe Zuleger and giving the Firebirds a 6-1 cushion.
  • Carroll (Wis.) answered with a decisive rally in the bottom half of the inning. The Pioneers strung together three home runs and six total runs to take a 7-6 lead, shifting the momentum.
  • The Firebirds were unable to regain control as Carroll (Wis.) added two more runs in the sixth and another in the eighth to extend the lead to 10-6.
  • Carthage mounted a late push in the ninth inning, as Dylan Ston recorded a sacrifice fly to score Landon Dykes-Sadowski, but the comeback attempt fell short in a 10-7 final.
