Women’s Lacrosse Soars Past North Central with Commanding 17-2 Road Victory

NAPERVILLE - The Carthage women's lacrosse team returned to action on Saturday afternoon in Naperville, Illinois, for a conference matchup against the North Central Cardinals. The Firebirds controlled the game from the opening draw, showcasing a balanced offensive attack and a stifling defensive effort to improve their record to 2-0 in conference play. 

How it Happened
FIRST PERIOD
  • Carthage set the tone early, erupting for six goals in the opening 15 minutes while holding the Cardinals without a shot. 
  • Hannah Kim opened the scoring, followed by goals from Auggie Claridge and Kelsey O'Brien, the latter assisted by Claridge. 
  • Kyleigh Higgins added to the surge before Kim netted a second of the period.
  • Rosie Nolan capped the quarter with a goal off an assist from Piper LeFevre, giving the Firebirds a commanding 6-0 lead. 
SECOND PERIOD
  • The Firebirds continued their offensive momentum in the second period, adding four more goals. 
  • Piper LeFevre began the scoring, and Kelsey O'Brien followed with her second of the game. 
  • Shannon Heitschmidt then found the back of the net off a LeFevre assist.
  • LeFevre closed out the half with a second goal, assisted by Higgins, extending Carthage's advantage to 10-0 at the break. 
THIRD PERIOD
  • Carthage maintained control in the third period, outscoring North Central 4-1.
  • Higgins and Karlie Young each scored early to push the lead further. 
  • North Central broke through with a power-play goal midway through the period, but the Firebirds quickly responded. 
  • O'Brien tallied a shorthanded goal, assisted by Higgins, and Young added a second of the game to make it 14-1 heading into the final period.
FOURTH PERIOD
  • In the final period, Carthage added three more goals to seal the victory. O'Brien completed a four-goal performance with a tally assisted by Young, and LeFevre recorded a third goal of the contest on a power play, again assisted by Higgins.
  • North Central managed a late power-play goal, but Claridge scored in the closing seconds to finalize the 17-2 result. 
High Flyers
  • O'Brien led all scorers with four goals, including the game-winner and a shorthanded tally.
  • LeFevre recorded three goals and two assists.
  • Higgins added two goals and three assists.
  • In goal, Xochitl Delvale-Vera anchored the defense in the net, recording three saves.
  • Carthage recorded 33 total shots and 24 shots on goal.

"Another great conference win!" said head coach Maddie Berni. "Proud of how we kept our composure throughout the game. We did a great job sharing the ball and playing team lacrosse!"
