Carthage Falls to North Park Despite Offensive Output, 14-11

KENOSHA — A back-and-forth contest swung decisively in the late innings as North Park used a seven-run stretch across the seventh and eighth innings to defeat Carthage 14-11 in the home opener for the Firebirds.

How it Happened
  • North Park struck first, plating a run in the opening inning before adding two more in the second to build a 3-0 lead. 
  • Carthage answered in the third, highlighted by a three-run home run from Zander Tubbs that capped a four-run inning and gave the Firebirds a 4-3 advantage.
  • The visitors regained the lead in the fourth on a two-run homer, but Carthage responded again in the fifth. Dylan Ston delivered a two-run single to put the Firebirds back in front, 6-5.
  • After North Park jumped ahead 7-6 in the sixth, Carthage answered immediately. Caden Meyer drove in the tying run before Jimmy Herget added a sacrifice fly to give Carthage an 8-7 lead heading into the seventh.
  • The game turned in the seventh inning as North Park capitalized on a defensive miscue to tie the game, before a three-run home run pushed the visitors back in front. An RBI double later in the inning extended the lead to 12-8.
  • The Vikings added another run on a wild pitch in the eighth to make it 13-8. Carthage continued to battle, scoring three times in the bottom half of the inning, including a two-run double by Tubbs to cut the deficit to 13-11.
  • The visitors added an insurance run in the ninth, and Carthage was unable to complete the comeback.
