DUBUQUE — No. 1 Carthage pushed host No. 14 Loras to the limit Saturday afternoon, but a back-and-forth contest slipped away in a five-set loss, 18-25, 25-22, 28-26, 20-25, 15-11, at the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.

- After falling behind 13-8 midway through the opening set, Carthage regrouped following a timeout and began chipping away. A service run from Ryan Kelly flipped momentum, highlighted by a pair of aces and aggressive play at the net.
- The Firebirds turned a 17-15 deficit into a commanding 21-17 lead and closed the set on a 12-5 run. Ben Heise and Ruben Emmerich delivered key kills down the stretch, while Carthage capitalized on multiple Loras errors to take the opener, 25-18.
- The second set featured 10 ties as neither side created separation early. Carthage leaned on Ryan Bartz and Heise offensively, while Hudson Sweitzer contributed at the net.
- With the score tied at 20, Loras strung together a decisive 5-2 run, using an ace and a pair of late kills to claim the set, 25-22, and even the match.
- Carthage again responded well, battling through another tightly contested frame that included 13 ties in the third. The Firebirds held a late edge and reached set point at 25-24 following a Bartz kill.
