Baseball Concludes Spring Trip

TUCSON — Carthage wrapped up its spring trip to Arizona with four games, falling to Hamline before earning two wins over Crown (Minn.) 12-3 and 15-4, before dropping the finale to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Statistics from the first game against Crown (Minn.) played on Mar. 12 (Thu) will be added at a later date.

How it Happened
Game Six
  • Carthage struck first in the bottom of the first when Zander Tubbs launched a two-run home run to give the Firebirds a 2-1 lead. Hamline answered with two runs in the third to move ahead, but Carthage responded immediately as AJ Gaca delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Carthage built its largest lead in the fourth inning. Michael Ossenfort opened the frame with a solo home run before Tubbs added an RBI single and Paul Reedy followed with a run-scoring single to extend the advantage to 6-3. 
  • Hamline chipped away with two runs in the sixth and tied the game in the seventh before taking the lead later in the inning. 
  • The Pipers then broke the game open with a three-run eighth and an eight-run ninth to pull away for a 17-6 victory.

 Game Seven
  • The Firebirds rebounded in the second game with a fast offensive start against Crown (Minn.). Dawson Gutke and Joe Zuleger each drove in runs with doubles in the first inning before Christian Duarte capped the rally with a three-run home run to put Carthage ahead 6-0.
  • Carthage continued to add on as Paul Reedy doubled home a run in the second inning and Dylan Ston delivered a two-run triple in the third to extend the lead to 9-0. 
  • Gutke followed with an RBI single later in the inning. Eric Fugate Jr. added a solo home run in the fifth, and Zuleger hit a solo home run in the seventh as the Firebirds secured a 15-4 victory.

 Game Eight
  • Carthage scored first in the opening inning on a sacrifice fly from Zuleger. The Stags tied the game in the second before pulling away with a seven-run fifth inning that included a two-run home run and several unearned runs following defensive miscues.
  • Claremont-Mudd-Scripps added four more runs in the eighth inning to seal a 13-1 win.
