Firebirds Run to Opening-Day Triumph Against MSOE

MILWAUKEE — Carthage opened the 2026 season in commanding fashion Saturday, defeating MSOE 10-2 behind a fast start and balanced scoring attack. The Firebirds scored five unanswered goals across the first half and controlled possession throughout, while the defense limited the Raiders to just two scores.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Carthage 10 - MSOE 2
  • Location: Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Viets Field
  • Records: Carthage 1-0, MSOE 0-1
How it Happened
  • Carthage struck first at 13:28 of the opening quarter as Collin McClure finished a feed from Rye Taylor, and Andy Slattery followed with an unassisted goal to make it 2-0 after one.
  • Angelo Cullen pushed the lead to three early in the second off a pass from McClure, and McClure added an unassisted goal less than a minute later.
  • Cullen connected again with 2:33 left in the half on an assist from Kyle Carollo to cap a five-goal run before MSOE scored just before halftime, sending Carthage to the break ahead 5-1.
  • McClure completed his hat trick midway through the third quarter off a setup from Jake Westland to extend the advantage to 6-1.
  • Westland and Taylor scored 47 seconds apart early in the fourth quarter, and after a Raider goal, Carollo tallied back-to-back unassisted scores in the final 2:06 to close the 10-2 victory.

Coachs Remarks
"A lot of work to do, but a good road win against a stingy defense," said head coach David Neff. "Our defense played great. Jake Williamson was outstanding in the pipes, but the shots were all contested, so credit the guys in front of him, too. Keyan Schugel was also great at the X against a guy who was a top regional guy last year at face-off. Offense is still learning, we had only one player with really college time out there today, and none of the guys have played a college game together til this afternoon. So hopefully we will grow as we build confidence and chemistry. Good road win, but we need to get to work on Lake Forest after we enjoy this one."

Team Results
  • Carthage has their home opener on Saturday, February 14, at 12 p.m. against Lake Forest.
