Carthage 8, UW-La Crosse 9
KENOSHA - The Carthage women's lacrosse team returned to action Saturday afternoon for their home opener against UW-La Crosse, battling through a thrilling, back-and-forth contest that stretched into triple overtime. After trading momentum all game and overcoming multiple Eagles rallies, the Firebirds ultimately fell in a sudden victory in the third overtime period.
FIRST PERIOD
- The Firebirds struck first at the 9:43 mark as Auggie Claridge found the back of the net off an assist from Piper LeFevre to take a 1-0 lead. The Eagles responded quickly, scoring at 8:31 to even the game at 1-1. Carthage regained control with back-to-back goals at 5:02 and 3:31, heading into the second period with a 3-1 advantage.
SECOND PERIOD
- The Eagles answered in the second, outscoring the Firebirds to erase the deficit and knot the score at 3-3 by halftime.
THIRD PERIOD
- Carthage came out firing in the second half, as Shannon Heitschmidt scored just 52 seconds into the third period to give the Firebirds a 4-3 lead. The Eagles tied the game at 13:22 (4-4), but Carthage responded with momentum. LeFevre converted a feed from Katy Berni, and shortly after, Reggie Ross finished an assist from LeFevre to put the Firebirds back in front, 6-4.
FOURTH PERIOD
- LeFevre extended the lead at 14:46, finishing an assist from Heitschmidt to make it 7-4. The Eagles capitalized on three man-up opportunities to rally and tie the game at 7-7 with 5:06 remaining. Kelsey O'Brien, assisted by Heitschmidt, restored the Firebirds' lead at 3:52 (8-7). However, the Eagles converted another man-up chance late in regulation to tie the game at 8-8 and force overtime.
OVERTIME
- Both teams battled through a scoreless overtime until the seventh period, when the Eagles broke through with 1:54 remaining to secure the sudden-victory win, edging the Firebirds in a hard-fought contest.
- LeFevre and O'Brien led the Firebirds with two goals.
- Claridge and Heitschmidt finished with one goal and two assists.
- The Firebirds took 32 shots, 19 being on goal.
- Xochitl Delvale-Vera finished with eight saves.
"We fought hard, defense did a great job keeping us in the game," said head coach Maddie Berni. "Looking forward to what we have to work on Monday and ready to get back at it."
