Firebirds Build Early Cushion, Top DePauw 12-5

KENOSHA — The Carthage College men's lacrosse team scored early and often Saturday, building a multi-goal cushion in each quarter on the way to a 12-5 victory over DePauw.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Carthage 12 - DePauw 5
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Art Keller Field
  • Records: Carthage 2-1, DePauw 1-1
How it Happened
  • Jake Westland opened the scoring at 11:38 of the first quarter off a feed from Collin McClure, and Keyan Schugel followed just 10 seconds later with an unassisted goal to make it 2-0.
  • Westland struck again at 6:18, this time assisted by Kyle Carollo, as the Firebirds surged ahead 3-0.
  • DePauw answered with 1:36 remaining in the period, but Westland completed a hat trick in the opening quarter with a goal in the final seconds to give Carthage a 4-1 lead after one.
  • Westland added his fourth goal at 12:23 of the second quarter to push the margin to 5-1.
  • DePauw briefly climbed back with two unassisted scores midway through the period, cutting the deficit to 5-3.
  • However, Rye Taylor restored momentum for the Firebirds, scoring with just two seconds left before halftime to send Carthage into the break ahead 6-3.
  • Carthage took control in the third quarter. Alex Bailey finished a pass from Taylor at 12:44, and Carollo later converted a McClure assist at 6:55.
  • Brandon Sawicki and Bailey each added goals — Bailey's second of the game coming off a Westland assist — and Landon Bakke capped a five-goal quarter with 53 seconds remaining.
  • DePauw scored late in the period, but Carthage carried an 11-4 advantage into the fourth.
  • Andy Slattery recorded the lone Firebirds goal of the final quarter at 6:56 before DePauw added a late tally.
  • Carthage maintained control throughout the closing minutes to secure the 12-5 win.

Coachs Remarks
"It wasn't a pretty game, but I told the guys you take a win when you get it and just try to learn from the mistakes. We were never organized in clears and had a lot of self-inflicted turnovers. Just not very clean lacrosse. We have to do a better job of beating our matchups on offense in order to get better looks at the cage. Right now, we are relying on Westland too much and are going to need some more guys drawing a slide. Defensively, we did a nice job overall. Get on ball defense, and good job on our ride. We didn't do a great job of taking away that right alley like we had game planned for, but really limited DePauw's shots on goal, and that was enough. That's a physical team, and their experience on defense caused a lot more disruption than our young players were ready for, but the whole team showed a lot of grit today. That game could have gone the other way a couple of times, and we persisted through."
