Carthage Comes Up Short in Defensive Battle with North Park

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College football team battled throughout Saturday's College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) matchup against North Park, but a late defensive touchdown was not enough to complete the comeback as the Firebirds fell 17-12 at Art Keller Field.

Carthage opened the scoring in the first quarter, and the teams traded field goals before North Park took a 10-6 lead into halftime. After a scoreless third quarter, the Vikings extended their advantage with a fourth-quarter touchdown. The Firebirds continued to fight, with Mariano Talamantez returning a fumble 67 yards for a touchdown with 23 seconds remaining, but Carthage ran out of time to overcome the deficit.

The Basics
  • Final Score: North Park 17, Carthage 12
  • Location: Art Keller Field — Kenosha, Wis.
  • Records: North Park (1-5, 1-3 CCIW); Carthage (2-4, 1-3 CCIW)
How it Happened
  • Carthage began the afternoon with a productive opening drive, moving 74 yards over 12 plays. The Firebirds reached scoring range and put the first points on the board when Mugdim Kreho connected on a 23-yard field goal with 4:09 remaining in the first quarter, giving the home team a 3-0 lead.
  • North Park responded in the second quarter with a 10-play, 58-yard drive. Paul Palmer finished the possession with a 1-yard rushing touchdown at the 8:05 mark, and Robert Kubon added the extra point to put the Vikings ahead 7-3.
  • The Firebirds answered with another scoring drive. Carthage moved 50 yards in eight plays, setting up Kreho for his second field goal of the afternoon, this time from 35 yards out. The kick cut the deficit to 7-6 with 3:30 left in the first half.
  • North Park added three points just before halftime. With time expiring in the second quarter, Kubon converted a 46-yard field goal to send the Vikings into the break with a 10-6 advantage.
  • Both defenses controlled the third quarter, keeping the game within one score. Carthage continued to look for opportunities to regain the lead, while North Park worked to sustain possessions and protect its narrow advantage.
  • The Vikings broke through early in the fourth quarter. After putting together a nine-play, 61-yard drive, Palmer connected with Jamaal Jones for a 19-yard touchdown pass with 9:21 remaining. Kubon's extra point increased North Park's lead to 17-6.
  • Carthage had an opportunity to respond later in the quarter when the Firebirds advanced into North Park territory. However, Isaiah Bernadel intercepted a Leo Chiappetta pass at the North Park 15-yard line with 7:17 remaining, ending the possession and giving the Vikings the ball back.
  • The Firebirds' defense continued to give the team opportunities to stay in the game, but Carthage was unable to convert a subsequent possession into points after turning the ball over on downs at the North Park 26-yard line.
  • With the clock winding down, Carthage produced one final scoring play. At the 23-second mark, Mariano Talamantez recovered a fumble and returned it 67 yards for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 17-12.
