ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The Carthage women's wrestling team competed in a pair of duals at the Fred Johnson Duals at Augustana College on Saturday morning. The Firebirds defeated the Upper Iowa Peacocks in convincing fashion but split the day after falling to the hosting Augustana Vikings.



CARTHAGE 36, UPPER IOWA 8

The Firebirds claimed forfeit wins at 103, 110, 117, and 124 to jump out to an early 20-0 lead over the Peacocks. Alexis Hozeska defeated Kylee Shoop with a fall at 1:31 before another pair of forfeits extended the Carthage lead to 35-0. The Peacocks claimed a win by decision at 160 and a win by fall at 207 to end the match with a 36-8 win for the Firebirds.

AUGUSTANA 28, CARTHAGE 15

The Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a win at 103, before Crystal Gutierrez won by fall (1:05) at 110 to give the Firebirds a 5-3 lead. A decision victory for the Vikings at 110 tied the dual at 6-6 and Carthage quickly took back the lead with Gutierrez claiming a tech fall victory at 117 to jump ahead 10-6. A 6-4 decision for Alaina Hollendoner at 124 extended the Carthage lead to 13-7. The Vikings found momentum in the back half of the dual, going on a 21-2 run in the final five bouts to claim the victory over the Firebirds.



"After a tough day of competition at Augustana," said Head Coach Tarkyia Mensah. "Our mindset is that hard lessons will become productive practices as we enter the second half of the season."



The Firebirds (5-7) return to action on Sunday, Jan. 11 as the team is set to compete at the Lakeland Muskie Scramble. Carthage women's wrestling returns to Tarble Arena on Friday, Jan. 16 as the Firebirds host Wis-Stevens Point. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
