Carthage Stays Alive with Shutout After Tight Loss in CCIW Tournament

BLOOMINGTON — Carthage College baseball opened Thursday's CCIW Tournament action with a narrow 3-2 loss to North Central (Ill.) after a ninth-inning rally came up just short, but the Firebirds responded emphatically in the nightcap with a 9-0 shutout over Millikin to stay alive in the postseason tournament.

How it Happened 
Game One
  • Carthage rallied late but came up just short against North Central in a 3-2 loss Thursday afternoon in the CCIW Tournament.
  • The Cardinals built a 3-0 lead through six innings, capitalizing on a pair of Carthage errors and timely hits, including a third-inning RBI single and a sixth-inning double.
  • The Firebirds mounted a ninth-inning comeback, scoring twice on a pair of North Central miscues and an RBI single from Christian Duarte.
  • Drew Knecht nearly tied the game on Duarte's hit but was thrown out at the plate to end the threat.
  • With runners on second and third, a flyout ended the rally for Carthage 3-2. 
Game Two
  • Carthage put together a complete team effort in a 9-0 win over Millikin in the nightcap of the day. 
  • The Firebirds struck first in the third inning when Matt Felber delivered an RBI single to score P.J. Moser
  • Moser came through again in the fourth, driving in two more runs with a single to right that extended the lead to 3-0. 
  • Carthage added another run in the fifth when Evan Devine dropped down a sacrifice bunt to bring in Felber, and Felber added his second RBI single in the sixth to make it 5-0.
  • Carthage continued to add on late, scoring in the eighth and erupting for three runs in the ninth. Drew Knecht, AJ Gaca, and Felber all contributed in the final frame to put the game out of reach. 
High Flyers
  • Despite the loss, Brandan Roberts pitched a complete game in game one, striking out five over eight innings. 
  • Ryan Scanlon was in command on the mound in game two, allowing just five hits over nine scoreless innings while striking out 11 to improve to 7-1 on the year.
  • P.J. Moser and Zander Tubbs each had two doubles in game two, and Matt Felber drove in three runs. 

Team Results
  • The Firebirds will play the winner of Game 6: #1 Illinois Wesleyan (1-0) vs. #2 North Central (1-0), with the game set for 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 9.
