Carthage Drops Regular-Season Finale Doubleheader at Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON — Carthage College closed out the regular season with back-to-back close contest losses at Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, falling 5-2 and 6-4. The Firebirds tied each game in the middle innings but were unable to hold off late rallies from the Titans, who used multi-run eighth and seventh innings to pull away in both contests.

How it Happened 
Game One 
  • Illinois Wesleyan jumped out to a 2-0 lead with runs in the first and second innings, taking advantage of a Carthage error and timely hitting.
  • The Firebirds cut the deficit in the fifth when Evan Devine reached on an error, allowing Matt Felber to score and make it 2-1.
  • Carthage tied the game in the seventh on an RBI single from Collin Callahan, scoring Jimmy Herget.
  • But the Titans responded in the bottom of the eighth with a three-run homer to reclaim the lead for good.
Game Two
  • P.J. Moser put Carthage on the board in the fourth with a solo home run to right.
  • Drew Knecht added to the lead in the fifth with a two-run shot to left, making it 3-0.
  • After Illinois Wesleyan cut into the deficit with runs in the fifth and sixth, the Firebirds responded in the seventh when Collin Callahan reached on an error, allowing Evan Devine to score and push the lead to 4-2.
  • The Titans rallied in the bottom of the seventh with a three-run frame, tying the game on a two-RBI single and taking the lead on a sacrifice fly.
  • An RBI single in the eighth extended the Illinois Wesleyan lead to 6-4, and Carthage was held scoreless in the final two innings.
