Firebirds Conclude 30-Win Season; Schmidt Wraps Storied Career

BLOOMINGTON — Carthage College baseball capped a strong 30-win season Friday evening, falling to the No. 1 seed Illinois Wesleyan 8-3 in the CCIW Tournament at Horenberger Field. The Firebirds wrapped up the year with a 30-14 record, marking the program's highest win total since 2018.

The loss also marked the final game for head coach Augie Schmidt IV, who finishes his legendary 38-year career at Carthage with a record of 1,032-565-5. Under his leadership, Schmidt's baseball teams have reached 30 or more wins in a season 20 times.

How it Happened 
  • Illinois Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning behind a double and a two-run single, then tacked on runs in the fourth and seventh to extend the advantage to 6-0.
  • Carthage showed signs of life in the bottom of the eighth as Drew Knecht delivered a two-run double to center field, then Christian Duarte followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3. 
  • The Firebirds had the momentum, but the Titans answered with two insurance runs in the ninth.
  • The Titans got a game-ending double play to win the game 8-3. 
High Flyers
  • Drew Knecht had two RBIs in the game and a double while Zander Tubbs also had a double. 
  • Wyatt Modory struck out two, over 6.1 innings of work. Jake Hartman Jr. made his second appearance in the CCIW Tournament striking out two ove one inning of work.
