Women's Lacrosse Advances to CCIW Championship Game

KENOSHA - The Carthage women's lacrosse team hosted the Illinois Wesleyan Titans on the CCIW Women's Lacrosse Tournament Semifinals at Art Keller Field on Wednesday night. It was a strong night for the Firebirds, as the team took a commanding lead in the first half and held on to punch their ticket to the CCIW Championship game.

How it Happened

FIRST QUARTER
  • Carthage struck first with a goal by Shannon Heitschmidt (13:28), but the Titans were able to erase the deficit with a goal.
  • Emma McDonald was the next Firebird to find the back of the net after a free position shot (6:26).
  • The Firebirds furthered their advantage with a goal by Rosie Nolan (5:13), assisted by Heitschmidt, giving Carthage a 3-1 lead to end the first quarter.

SECOND QUARTER
  • Nolan got the Firebirds started with a goal ten seconds into the quarter (14:49), assisted by Piper LeFevre. 
  • Carthage's 3-0 run came to an end with a Titan's goal, but the Firebirds quickly retaliated with a goal by LeFevre (11:19), her first of the contest.
  • Bailey Koestel struck next from the Firebirds with a goal (9:55), along with Heitschmidt for her second goal of the contest (9:41), giving Carthage a 7-2 lead. 
  • LeFevre extended the Firebird lead with a goal (8:31).
  • Soon after, Nolan followed with back to back goals (7:20; 5:27), her third and fourth of the contest.

THIRD QUARTER
  • The Firebirds started off the second half with a goal from LeFevre for a hat trick (13:51).
  • The Titans cut into Carthage's lead with a goal, but the Firebirds fired back with Nolan's fifth goal of the contest (7:53). 
  • After a free position attempt, LeFevre earned her fourth goal (6:54), giving the Firebirds a 13-3 advantage.

FOURTH QUARTER
  • To start the final quarter, the Firebirds found the back of the net with a goal from Heitschmidt for a hat trick (13:37).
  • Shortly after, Koestel scored her second goal of the night (8:45), giving Carthage a 15-3 lead. 
  • The Titans narrowed the lead with a goal, but the Firebirds wasted no time responding with a goal by Koestel for a hat trick (0:27). 
  • The Firebirds persevered and came out on top with a score of 16-4. 

High Flyers
  • Nolan led the Firebirds with a career high five goals.
  • LeFevre finished with four goals and three assists.
  • Heitschmidt finished with three goals and an assist.
  • Xochitl Delvale-Vera finished with 10 saves on the way to another victory.

Coach's Remarks

"I'm really proud of how everyone showed up today," said Head Coach Maddie Berni. "We put our foot on the gas and never let up! Onto the championship!"
