Coach Gillmore Earns 600th Win as Firebirds split with Augustana

MOLINE — The Carthage College softball team returned to action Saturday afternoon, for a conference matchup against Augustana College. In game one the Firebirds fell to the Vikings 13-0. Game two resulted in a comeback from the Firebirds, winning 10-2 over the Vikings. The win secured Amy Gillmore her 600th win for the Firebirds. Gillmore is in her 28th year as Carthage's head softball coach.

How it Happened
Game One
  • The Firebirds started the game with a quick inning, scoring no runs on no hits and no one left on base.
  • In the bottom of the first, the Vikings scored one run with two hits to take the lead (1-0).
  • One runner was left on base in the top of the second for the Firebirds (1-0).
  • The Vikings had six hits in the bottom of the second to score seven runs on the Firebirds (8-0).
  • A scoreless third inning for both sides kept the score at 8-0 going into the fourth.
  • The Firebirds scored no runs and left no one on base in the top of the fourth (8-0).
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Augustana had five hits and scored five runs to stretch their lead to 13-0.
  • The Vikings held the Firebirds in the bottom of the fifth to no runs and took the win 13-0 in five innings. 

Game Two
  • To start game two, the Vikings scored no runs and left no one on base.
  • The Firebirds scored early in the bottom of the first. Clare Rettler started it off with a single up the middle. Rettler advanced to second on a passed ball. After a sacrifice bunt from Kristina Chronos, Rettler advanced to third. Addison Simonson singled to right field to score Rettler (1-0). Izzy Hernandez came up next and sinlged to right center. Olivia Hristov singled to center field and scored simonson (2-0). Rylee Boyd singled to left center to score Hernandez (3-0).
  • A scoreless second inning for both sides kept the score 3-0 going into the third. 
  • The Vikings dug into the Firebirds lead scoring two runs in the top of the third (3-2).
  • In the bottom of the third, the Firebirds left two on base (3-2).
  • The Firebirds held the Vikings to no runs in the top of the fourth (3-2).
  • Tallulah Finegold and Rettler started the bottom of the fourth off for the Firebirds with singles. Chronos got on base with a walk. Gwen Hendrick doubled down the left field line to score Rettler and Chronos (5-2).
  • The fifth inning saw no runs cross the plate for either side (5-2).
  • The Firebirds allowed the Vikings one hit but no runs in the top of the 6th (5-2).
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Hernandez started it off with a single to the shortstop. Leiah Cardona subbed in to pinch run. Hendrick homered to center field and scored Cardona (7-2). Hristov kept the bats rolling with a single to center field. Boyd doubled to left field and advanced Hristov to third. Hana Adler filed out to second base for a sacrifice fly, scoring Hristov and advancing Boyd to third (8-2). Finegold came up next and walked. Rettler singled to left center to score Boyd and advance Finegold to third (9-2). After a passed ball, Finegold scored, winning the game by run rule in six innings (10-2). 

High Flyers
  • In game one, Gwen led the Firebirds with one hit. 
  • In game two, Rettler led the Firebirds with five hits, two run, and going five for five at the plate. 
  • The Firebirds collected 19 hits over 47 plate appearances on the day.
