No. 6 Firebirds Clinch Regular-Season CCIW Title With Four-Set Win Over Augustana

KENOSHA — The No. 6 Carthage College men's volleyball team picked up their 20th win of the season on Saturday as the Firebirds defeated Augustana (Ill.) 3-1 to earn the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) regular season title.

How it Happened
  • Augustana (Ill.) opened the match with a 9-5 advantage following a Carthage service error.
  • The Firebirds trimmed the deficit to one behind an ace from Owen Otto and an Augustana attack error.
  • Carthage tied the set at 23 on another Vikings error, but Augustana held on for a 26-24 win.
  • In the second set, Carthage jumped out to a 6-3 lead before Augustana evened the score at seven.
  • A block from Owen Hendricks sparked a Firebirds surge, followed by kills from Hudson Sweitzer and Hendricks to extend the lead to 21-15.
  • Otto sealed the set with a kill as Carthage evened the match with a 25-20 win.
  • In the third, consecutive kills from Hendricks put Carthage ahead 13-8.
  • After Augustana pulled within four, the Firebirds closed the set on an 8-0 run to take it 25-13.
  • Augustana responded in the fourth with a 10-6 lead, capitalizing on a kill.
  • Carthage regained control with key kills from Ryan Morey and Otto.
  • A kill from Ben Heise kept the Firebirds within one at 18-17.
  • With the set tied at 20, Carthage rattled off five straight points to close the match, highlighted by kills from Otto and Heise and a final block by Sweitzer.
