Softball Sweeps University of Chicago Tuesday Afternoon

KENOSHA — The Carthage College softball team returned to action Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference matchup against the University of Chicago Maroons. The Firebirds completed the sweep over the Maroons to complete regular season play.

How it Happened
Game One
  • Game one started scoreless for the first inning (0-0).
  • In the top of the second, the Maroons left one runner on base (0-0)
  • The Firebirds broke the scoreless game in the bottom of the second, scoring one run. Gwen Hendrick doubled to right center with one out. Hendrick crossed the plate with Hana Adler's single to right center (1-0).
  • The Maroons tied it up in the top of the third, scoring one run (1-1).
  • In the bottom of the third, the Maroons held the Firebirds to no hits and no runners left on base (1-1).
  • The Maroons collected one hit in the top of the fourth (1-1).
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the Firebirds scored one run to take the lead. With one out, Kelly Gaiser tripled to left center. To score Gaiser, Hendrick doubled to left center, forcing the score to 2-1 for the Firebirds.
  • The fifth and sixth innings saw no score for both sides, keeping the lead to the Firebirds (2-1).
  • The Firebirds forced three quick outs in the top of the seventh to secure the Firebirds' win (2-1).
Game Two
  • Both sides left runners on base in the first two innings (0-0).
  • In the top of the third, the Maroons left one runner on base (0-0).
  • The Firebirds broke the scoreless game in the bottom of the third, scoring one run. Rylee Boyd singled through the left side to start the inning for the Firebirds. Rettler moved Boyd into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Kristina Chronos came to the plate next and reached first on a fielder's choice while also moving Boyd to third. Boyd crossed the plate after Addison Simonson reached first on a fielder's choice (1-0). 
  • The fourth and fifth innings saw no runs cross the plate for both sides, leading to the Firebirds retaining the lead going into the sixth inning (1-0).
  • The Maroons collected one hit and left one on base in the top of the sixth (1-0).
  • In the bottom of the seventh, the Firebirds grew their lead, scoring one run. With one out, Gaiser tripled to right center. Hendrick came to the plate next, hitting a double down the left field line, scoring Gaiser (2-0). 
  • The Maroons dug into the Firebird's lead in the top of the seventh, scoring one run. With the tying run on second, the Firebirds held off the Maroons to complete the sweep (2-1). 

High Flyers
  • Hendrick led the Firebirds at the plate with one run, three hits, and two RBIs.
  • Maddie Conway pitched a full game in the circle for the win (12-6). 
  • Emma Faubel collected her first win in the circle for the season (1-0) in game two.
