Softball Concludes 2025 Campaign in Bloomington at the CCIW Tournament

North Central 7, Carthage 4


BLOOMINGTON — The Carthage College softball team returned to action Thursday afternoon at the 2025 CCIW Softball Tournament. The Carthage Firebirds faced the North Central Cardinals on Thursday afternoon to open the 2025 postseason. The Cardinals overturned the Firebirds mid-game to knock Carthage out of the tournament.

How it Happened
  • The Firebirds forced the Cardinals to leave one runner on base in the top of the first (0-0).
  • The Firebirds got on the board in the bottom of the first. Clare Rettler started it off for the Firebirds with a walk. Rettler stole second to get into scoring position. Izzy Hernandez singled to right field with two outs, scoring Rettler (1-0). 
  • The Cardinals tied it up in the top of the second with a single through the left side (1-1).
  • In the bottom of the second, the Firebirds left no one on base (1-1). 
  • The Cardinals took the lead in the top of the third, scoring two runs (3-1).
  • The Firebirds dug into the Cardinals' lead in the bottom of the third, scoring one run. With one out, Rettler singled to third base. Rettler stole second, and with two outs, Addison Simonson singled to center field to score Rettler (3-2).
  • In the top of the fourth, the Cardinals increase their lead by four runs and leaving two on base (7-2).
  • Gwen Hendrick singled to center field to start the bottom of the fourth for the Firebirds. With one out, Rylee Boyd laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Hendrick into scoring position. Hana Adler singled to center field to score Hendrick (7-3). The Firebirds closed the inning, leaving three on base.
  • The fifth inning was scoreless and left runners on base for both sides (7-3).
  • In the top of the sixth, the Cardinals left one runner on base (7-3).
  • To start the bottom of the sixth, Boyd got on base with a walk. With one out, Tallulah Finegold doubled to left center, scoring Boyd (7-4). The Firebirds ended the inning, leaving two runners on base.
  • The Cardinals left one runner on base in the top of the seventh (7-4).
  • With one out, Hendrick started the bottom of the seventh for the Firebirds with a single up the middle. Olivia Hristov grounded out to second base, moving Hendrick into scoring position. With two outs, the Firebirds could not bring a run across the plate. The Cardinals took the win over the Firebirds (7-4), knocking Carthage out of the CCIW tournament. 

High Flyers
  • Rettler led the Firebirds at the plate with three hits, two runs, and one RBI.
  • The Firebirds collected 10 hits over the Cardinals.
