Softball Celebrates Senior Day Sunday Afternoon

KENOSHA — The Carthage College softball team returned to action Sunday afternoon for their last regular-season conference matchup against the Illinois Wesleyan Titans.

The Firebirds recognized a standout group of seniors Saturday afternoon, including Kristina Chronos, Tallulah Finegold, Maddie Conway, and Izzy Hernandez. 

How it Happened
Game One
  • Game one stayed scoreless for both sides for the first five innings.
  • The Titans took the lead in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs on the Firebirds (5-0).
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Firebirds tried to dig into the Titans' lead, scoring one run. Clare Rettler started it off for the Firebirds, laying down a bunt single. Rettler stole second, and Kelly Gaiser got on base with a walk. Gwen Hendrick singled to center field, scoring Rettler (6-1).
  • The Titans increased their lead in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs (8-1).
  • The Firebirds left one runner on base in the bottom of the seventh, handing the Titans the win for game one (8-1).
Game Two
  • Game two saw no score for the first four innings.
  • In the top of the fifth, the Firebirds broke the scoreless game, scoring one run. Hana Adler singled through the left side. Leiah Cardona came into the game to pinch run for Adler. Rettler singled with a bunt, advancing Cardona. A throwing error by the third baseman off of Rettler's bunt caused Cardona to advance to third. Kristina Chronos lined out to right field, scoring Cardona (1-0).
  • The Titans answered back to the Firebirds and took the lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth (2-1).
  • A scoreless sixth inning left the lead to the Titans, going into the seventh inning (2-1).
  • The Titans held the Firebirds to one runner left on base to complete the sweep (2-1). 

High Flyers
  • In game one, Rettler led the Firebirds with one hit and one run.
  • In game two, with two hits, Rettler led the Firebirds at the plate.
