No. 6 Firebirds Sweep No. 10 Loras to Capture CCIW Tournament Title

KENOSHA — The No. 1 seed in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Carthage College men's volleyball picked up a straight-set sweet over the No. 2 seed Loras 3-0 to win their CCIW Tournament Championship on Saturday. 

The Basics
  • Final Score: Carthage 3 - Loras 0 (25-22,25-22, 26-24)
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Tarble Arena
  • Records: Carthage 22-3, Loras 18-5

How it Happened
  • The teams traded points early in the first set until Loras pulled ahead 20-18 following a kill.
  • Carthage, ranked No. 6 nationally by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) coaches poll, responded with a five-point surge, fueled by kills from Owen Hendricks and Ben Heise and an ace from Owen Otto, to take a 23-20 lead.
  • Loras, ranked No. 10 in this week's AVCA coaches poll, cut the deficit to two, but a finishing kill by Heise secured the set for the Firebirds, 25-22.
  • The second set followed a similar pattern, with both sides going point for point.
  • A kill from Otto gave Carthage a narrow 21-20 advantage.
  • The Firebirds then closed the set on a 4-1 run, capped by a kill from Ryan Cholewinski for another 25-22 win.
  • Hudson Sweitzer delivered a solo block in the third set to give Carthage a one-point lead.
  • After Loras took a 16-15 edge, the Firebirds answered with two Hendricks kills and a Duhawks attack error to move ahead 18-16.
  • Loras rallied to tie the set at 24, but Carthage clinched the match behind a Hendricks kill and another Duhawks error.

High Flyers
  • Ben Heise, Owen Hendricks and Owen Otto all tallied double-digit kills finishing with 12, 11 and 10 respectively. 
  • Ryan Morey had a match-best 32 assists and a team-best 12 digs. 
  • Otto chipped in with nine digs.
