WINTER HAVEN — The Carthage College softball team returned for day two of their spring break trip in Winter Haven, Florida. The Firebirds outscored their opponents, Nichols and Albertus Magnus, 18-4 on the day.Â
GAME 1
- In the second inning, the Firebirds got the bats rolling. Gwen Hendrick started it off for the Firebirds with a double to left field, and Maddie Conway got hit by a pitch. Hana Adler reached first on a fielding error, scoring Hendricks (1-0). After several walks, Conway scored, unearned (2-0).
- Nichols dipped into the Firebirds' lead, forcing the score 2-1 and ending the top of the third.Â
- Adler got the ball rolling for the Firebirds in the bottom of the fourth with a single to right field. Isabelle Stombres reached on a fielder's choice and would score after Clare Rettler singled with a fielding error (3-1).
- In the top of the fifth, Nichols scored off of a hit by a pitch and a triple to right field (3-2).
- The Firebirds had a strong bottom of the 6th with hits all around. Peyton Kryza started off the Firebirds with a single to right field. Rettler laid down a bunt for a single to score Leiah Cardona. The Firebirds scored two more runs in the inning off of Kristina Chronos' triple to right field (6-2).Â
- The Firebirds held off Nichols in the top of the 7th to take the win 6-2.
GAME 2
- The Firebirds opened the second game right off the bat, scoring six runs in the first inning (6-0). Chronos, Olivia Hristov, Hendrick, Izzy Hernandez, Tallulah Finegold, and Adler all had hits in the first inning.
- Albertus tried to dip into the Firebirds' lead by scoring in the bottom of the first (6-1).
- The Firebirds had another big inning in the third. Hendrick started it off with a single to left field. Hendrick, Hernandez, Finegold, and Adler all crossed the plate during the top of the third to force the lead to 10-1.
- Albertus scored in the bottom of the third off a couple of singles (10-2).
- In the fourth, Hendrick singled to center field to start the bats for the Firebirds. Hendrick scored from Adler's hit to the right side (11-2).
- Chronos started the Firebirds off in the fifth with a walk. Hristov singled to center field to score Chronos, forcing the score to 12-2.Â
- Run rule by the Firebirds would close out the game early in five innings.Â
- Conway (1-1) and Hristov (2-0) both added to their win records in the circle.Â
- The Firebirds recorded 24 hits on the day.
- Rettler (2) and Hendricks (4) led the Firebirds in hits for each game.
