WINTER HAVEN — The Carthage College softball team returned for day three of their spring break trip in Winter Haven, Flordia. The Firebirds split the day, taking the win over Curry (4-2) and loss from St. Scholastica (8-6).Â
GAME 1
- A scoreless game until the bottom of the third, Curry scored two runs from a double to right center and a single to center field (2-0).
- The Firebirds scratched at Curry's 2-0 lead in the top of the 6th. Izzy Hernandez reached first on an error to start the inning for the Firebirds. Maddie Conway also reached first on an error, and one run was scored (2-1). A single by Gwen Hendrick scored a run to tie the game 2-2.
- The Firebirds broke the tie and took the lead in the top of the seventh. Clare Rettler and Kristina Chronos started it off for the Firebirds, both with singles. Kelly Gaiser laid down a sac bunt to advance Rettler and Chronos. After a wild pitch and Hernandez's triple to right field, the Firebirds forced the score to 4-2.
- Curry could not answer back to the Firebirds, handing the win to the Firebirds (4-2).Â
GAME 2
- The Firebirds scored early in the first. Chronos started the Firebirds off with a single to right field. Olivia Hristov tripled to center field to score Chronos (1-0).
- Finegold and Gaiser scored in the second after two walks and a single by Rettler, forcing the Firebirds to lead 3-0.
- The Firebirds added to their lead with Hendrick and Hernandez scoring from Finegold's double to the left side (5-0). Gaiser scored right after to force the Firebrids' lead to 6-0, closing the bottom of the third.Â
- The Saints did not back down and dug into the Firebirds' lead in the fourth (6-2).
- The Saints scored in the top of the fifth, forcing the score to 6-3.
- In the sixth, the Saints scored three runs off of three hits to tie 6-6.
- The Saints scored two more runs to take the lead in the top of the seventh (8-6).
- The Firebirds could not get the bats rolling in the bottom of the seventh, handing the Saints the 8-6 win.Â
- The Firebirds collected 20 hits and 10 runs over the two games.
- Conway collected another win to add to her record in the circle (2-1).
