Softball Splits First Day of Spring Break Trip in Winter Haven

WINTER HAVEN — The Carthage College softball team opened their 2025 campaign and spring break trip in Winter Haven, Florida Saturday morning. The Firebirds split the day with a 7-0 loss against the Wentworth Leopards and a 6-5 win over the Northwestern Eagles. 

How it Happened
GAME 1
  • A scoreless first inning brought the Leopards multiple hits to score six runs in the second, forcing the score to 6-0.
  • The Leopards singled to left center to score one, making the score 7-0 after the fifth.
  • The Firebirds could not get the bats rolling, forcing the 7-0 win to the Leopards.
GAME 2
  • The Firebirds put a number on the scoreboard in the second with a double to center field from Tallulah Finegold. Finegold scored Gwen Hendrick and Izzy Hernandez after they both singled to right and center field, for a 2-0 score going into the third. 
  • Clare Rettler started the third with a bunt single. Kelly Gaiser grounded out to score Rettler while Kristina Chronos advanced to third on the throw. To force the score to 4-0 leaving the third, Olivia Hristov grounded out on a bunt to score Chronos. 
  • The Firebirds added to their lead in the top of the sixth starting with Hendrick reaching on a fielder's choice. Finegold reached on a fielders error, forcing Hendrick to score on the error (5-0). 
  • Two walks and three singles in the bottom of the sixth let the Eagles dig into the Firebirds lead (5-2).
  • In the top of the seventh, Rettler laid down a bunt for a single. Chronos singled through the right side to advance Rettler to third. A fly out by Gaiser scored Rettler forcing the Firebirds lead to 6-2.
  • The Eagles did not settle to the Firebirds and scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Firebirds held off the Eagles for a 6-5 win. 

High Flyers
  • The Firebirds recorded 12 hits and six RBIs over both games.
  • Rettler led the Firebirds in hits with four and runs with two.
  • Olivia Hristov collected the win over the eagles in the circle (1-0).
