Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Women’s Water Polo 3-1 at CWPA Crossover Tourney

GROVE CITY - The Carthage College women's water polo team returned to action Friday (March 28) and Saturday (March 29). The Firebirds took on Washington and Jefferson and Wheaton (Mass.) Friday. Saturday, Carthage faced Connecticut and Grove City.

  • Final score: Carthage 9 - W&J 17

How it Happened
Game One
  • The Presidents outscored the Firebirds in the first period 4-1. Grace Steinberg had the lone Firebird goal in the First at 5:49 (4-1).
  • The Firebirds scored one goal in the second period at 4:22 by Brenna Carstens. The Presidents scored four goals in the second increasing their lead over the Firebirds (8-2).
  • Mak Werner started the Firebirds in the third period with a goal at 6:14 (8-3). The Presidents scored three goals (11-3). The Firebirds answered right back and scored two goals (Werner and Yamila Areizaga) to force the score to 11-5. The Presidents scored with 18 seconds left to advance their lead to 12-5.
  • In the fourth period, the Presidents outscored the Firebirds 5-4. Werner, Xiomara Trejo, and Morrigan Bushroe recorded goals for the birds. The Presidents held off the Firebirds to take the win 17-9.
Game Two
  • The Firebirds stole the lead early from the Lyons, scoring seven goals in the first period. Werner collected three, Bushroe two, Carstens one, and Emily Hughes one (7-0).
  • Kiera Crawley scored at 7:14 in the second period to force the Firebirds lead 8-0 to start the second period. The Lyons got on the board with two goals to end the second (8-2).
  • The Firebirds outscored the Lyons in the third period 2-0. Carstens scored at 7:30 and Trejo scored at 1:51 (10-2).
  • The Lyons fought to take the lead in the fourth period, scoring two goals (10-4). The Firebirds held off the Lyons to take the win 10-4. 
Game Three
  • Scoring went back and forth to start the game in the first quarter. The Camels outscored the Firebirds in the first. Steinberg put up two back-to-back goals at 6:06 and 5:17. Carstens and Trejo also recorded goals, however, the Camels led after the first quarter (5-4).
  • The Camels advanced their lead with the first goal of the second quarter. Areizaga (2) and Trejo (1) put up goals to help the Firebirds steal the lead in the second (7-6). 
  • Just 51 seconds into the third quarter, Steinberg scored stretching the Firebirds' lead 8-6. The Camels scored two more goals and Areizaga and Crawley scored for the Firebirds, advancing the birds' lead to 10-8. 
  • The Firebirds had the one lone goal in the fourth, scored by Trejo at 6:39, to secure the win over the Camels (11-8). 
Game Four
  • The Wolverines took the lead in the first quarter, outscoring the Firebirds 4-3. Areizaga and Carstens scored for the Firebirds at 6:31, 5:59, and 5:14 (4-3).
  • In the second period, Areizaga led the Firebirds in goals with three and Trejo put up one. The Wolverines outscored the Firebirds 5-4, advancing their lead going into the third.
  • The Firebirds had a strong third period, outscoring the Wolverines 6-4. Areizaga (2), Kaylin Machuca, Werner, and Trejo (2) put up goals helping the Firebirds tie the game at 13-13 ending the third.
  • Aubrey Korzyniewski and Mak Werner had back-to-back goals to start the fourth period and take the lead over the Wolverines (15-13). With 1:58 left on the clock, the Wolverines scored forcing the score 15-14. Areizaga scored at 1:41, advancing the Firebirds' lead to 16-14. The Wolverines scored one goal with 1:13 left on the clock, but the Firebirds held off the Wolverines to take the win 16-15. 

High Flyers
  • The Firebirds recorded 46 shots and 45 exclusions on the weekend.
  • Rylee McGee collected three wins in goal.
