Women’s Water Polo Concludes Season with Fifth Place Finish at CWPA Championships

ROCK ISLAND - The Carthage College women's water polo team returned to action in Rock Island, Ill. for the CWPA Championship Tournament. With nine teams in the bracket fighting for the top two spots to secure their ticket to the USAWP Division III National Championships. The Carthage Firebirds placed fifth battling hard over the weekend, facing Washington and Jefferson, Grove City, and Penn State Behrend, resulting in a 2-1 record over the Championship weekend.

Game One
  • Final score: Carthage 14 - W&J 16

  • Final score: Carthage 12 - Grove City 8

How it Happened
Game One
  • Mak Werner scored the first goal for the Firebirds at 4:08 in the first period. Brenna Carstens had the other goal in the first for the Firebirds at 2:30. The Presidents scored four goals in the first for the lead going into the second (4-2).
  • The Firebirds outscored the Presidents in the second period. Grace Steinberg scored at 3:36. Werner and Yamila Areizaga scored within 38 seconds of each other. The Presidents scored two goals in the second period to keep the lead, leaving the second (6-5). 
  • The Firebirds tied it up in the third period. Carstens scored first for the Firebirds at 7:21. Areizaga led the Firebirds in the third with three goals and Werner put up one. The Presidents scored four in the third (10-10).
  • In the fourth period, the Firebirds and the Presidents went back and forth. Kaylin Machuca scored early at 7:42. Kiera Crawley scored at 6:51 and Carstens hit the net at 5:49. Xiomara Trejo scored with 30 seconds left to try and take the lead from the Presidents. However, the Presidents scored six goals in the fourth to take the win over the Firebirds 16-14. 
Game Two
  • Trejo and Steinberg (2) got the Firebirds on the board first to start the first period. The Wolverines scored one goal late in the first to end the period (3-1).
  • To start the second period, the Wolverines scored two goals. The Firebirds answered right back with two goals from Werner and Trejo. To end the second, the Wolverines and the Firebirds (Trejo) both scored one goal (6-4). 
  • The Firebirds had a strong third period, outscoring the Wolverines 5-1. Werner, Steinberg (2), Morrigan Bushroe, and Trejo all put up goals for the Firebirds (11-5).
  • Aubrey Korzyniewski had the lone Firebird goal in the fourth period. The Wolverines tried to dig into the Firebirds' lead, scoring three goals in the fourth. However, the Firebirds held off the Wolverines for the win (12-8).
Game Three
  • The Firebirds scored six goals in the first period. Werner led the Firebirds with two goals and Areizaga, Machuca, Crawley, and Trejo all put up one. The Lions got one goal at 4:51, but the Firebirds were unstoppable and left the first period leading 6-1.
  • Trejo and Areizaga led the Firebirds in the second period with two goals each. Bushroe, Steinberg, and Lowery also put up goals for the Firebirds. The Firebirds held off the Lions to one goal in the second, keeping their lead heading into the third (13-2).
  • Carstens started the Firebirds off in the third period scoring at 6:17. Steinberg and Faith Harris added to the Firebirds lead at 2:07 and 0:09 (16-2). 
  • The Lions scored first to start the last period, scoring two goals. The Firebirds scored three more goals (Korzyniewski, Carstens, Terjo) increasing their lead and taking the win over the Lions in the fifth place match (19-4). 
High Flyers
Game One
  • The Firebirds recorded 31 shots, six assists, and nine exclusions over the Presidents.
  • Areizaga led the Firebirds with eight shots and four goals.
  • Rylee McGee collected six saves in goal. 
Game Two
  • The Firebirds recorded 25 shots, 6 assists, and 11 exclusions over the Wolverines.
  • Steinberg and Trejo led the Firebirds with four goals.
  • McGee collected seven saves in goal. 
Game Three
  • The Firebirds recorded 30 shots, 13 assists, and five exclusions over the Lions.
  • Trejo led the Firebirds with four goals.
  • McGee collected 12 saves in goal.
