WINTER HAVEN — The Carthage College softball team closed out their spring break trip in Winter Haven, Florida Friday afternoon. The Firebirds split the day taking the win in game one against Gettysburg (5-2) and falling to Calvin in game two (5-2).
GAME 1
- The Firebirds scored early in the first with Clare Rettler starting off with a single to third base. Kristina Chronos singled to third base to advance Rettler. Izzy Hernandez came up next and singled to left field to score Rettler and advance Chronos (1-0). After a reach on an error by Gwen Hendrick and Addison Simonson fly out to center field, Chronos scored with an unearned run (2-0).Â
- The scoreboard didn't see a change until the top of the fifth. After two singles and a fly out sac, Gettysburg forced the score to 2-1 digging into the Firebirds lead.Â
- The Firebirds stretched their lead in the bottom of the sixth starting off with Olivia Hristov with a single to shortstop. Hernandez singled to center field advancing Hristov. With a double by Hendrick, Hristov and Hernandez scored forcing the Firebrids lead (4-1). Simonson singled to center field to score Hendrick forcing the score to 5-1.Â
- Gettysburg battled in the top of the seventh to dig into the Firebirds lead. After a hit by a pitch, a walk, and a single to center field, Gettysburg scored one run (5-2). The Firebirds held Gettysburg off to take the win 5-2.Â
GAME 2
- The Firebirds were on the board first in the top of the second. Hernandez started the Firebirds off with a single to right field. Hernandez advanced to second after Simonson's single to center field. Tallulah Finegold singled to right center to score Hernandez and force the Firebirds to take the lead (1-0).
- The Knights tied it up scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the second (1-1).
- Taking the lead in the third, the Knights scored after a walk, a sac bunt, and a single through the left side (2-1).Â
- Calvin advanced their lead, scoring three in the bottom of the fifth all unearned (5-1).
- In the top of the seventh, the Firebirds battled to take the lead from the Knights. Finegold started it off with a walk. Hana Adler reached first on an error, advancing Finegold. Rettler laid down a bunt to advance both Adler and Finegold into scoring position. Chronos singled through the right side, to score Finegold (5-2). The Knights held off the Firebirds to take the win 5-2.Â
- Hernandez led the Firebirds in hits with three in game one.
- Rettler led the Firebirds in hits with two in game two.
- The Firebirds collected 17 hits and seven runs over two games of play.
- Maddie Conway added to her winning record in the circle (5-1).Â
