Softball Splits in Illinois Against the Foresters After Extra Innings in Game Two

LAKE FOREST — The Carthage College softball team returned to action in Lake Forest, Illinois to take on Lake Forest Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
Game One
  • The Firebirds took the lead early in the top of the first, scoring eight runs and recording seven hits. Clare Rettler started it off the Firebirds singling to third base with a bunt. Addie Simonson's single to left field, scoring Rettler (1-0). Gwen Hendrick singled up the middle to score Simonson (2-0). Two Firebirds crossed the plate, Hendrick and Izzy Hernandez, with Kelly Gaiser's single down the left field line (4-0). Peyton Kryza singled down the right field line, scoring Skylar Swatkowski (5-0). Kristina Chronos singled through the right side advancing and scoring Rettler, Kryza, and Hana Adler (8-0). 
  • The Foresters dug into the Firebirds' lead in the bottom of the fourth scoring one run (8-1). 
  • Lake Forest scored in the bottom of the sixth with a homerun (8-2).
  • In the top of the seventh, the Firebirds advanced their lead scoring three. Adler started it off for the Firebirds with a walk. After Chronos reached first on an error, Simonson tripled to score Chronos and Adler (10-2). Hernandez singled down the right field line, to score Simonson (11-2). 
  • The Firebirds held off the Foresters in the bottom of the seventh to take the win.
Game Two
  • The Firebirds got on the board early in the first. Rettler scored on a wild pitch after singling down the left field line. 
  • In the top of the second, the Firebirds increased their lead scoring three. Olivia Hristov and Tallulah Finegold started the inning off for the Firebirds both with walks. Adler singled to center field to score Finegold and Hristov (3-0). Adler added to the Firebirds' lead, scoring on a passed ball (4-0). 
  • The Foresters scored three in the bottom of the second after two singles, a double, and a homerun (4-3). 
  • Swatkowski scored in the fourth after Rettler doubled, forcing the Firebirds' lead to 5-3.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Foresters dug into the Firebirds lead and scored after a sacrifice fly (5-4)
  • In the top of the seventh, Chronos walked and scored after Hendrick doubled to left field (6-4). 
  • The Forester answered right back and tied it up in the bottom of the seventh with three doubles and scoring two runs (6-6). 
  • After two extra innings, the Foresters took the win with a four run homerun in the bottom of the ninth. 

High Flyers
  • In game one Hendrick led the Firebirds in hits with four. 
  • Rettler led the Firebirds in hits with three in game two.
  • The Firebirds collected 24 hits and 14 RBIs on the day. 
  • Maddie Conway recorded another win in the circle (6-1).
