Softball Splits the Day Against Ohio Wesleyan and Ithaca

WINTER HAVEN — The Carthage College softball team returned for day five of their spring break trip in Winter Haven, Florida. The Firebirds took the win over Ohio Wesleyan (10-2) and fell to Ithaca (7-4). 

How it Happened
GAME 1
  • OWU got on the board first, from two singles to left field (2-0).
  • The Firebirds dug into OWU's lead in the bottom of the fourth. Olivia Hristov doubled to the left side to start the Firebirds off. Izzy Hernandez reached first on an error, and Gwen Hendrick walked before Addison Simonson singled to center field, scoring Hernandez and Hristov (2-2). Peyton Kryza singled to right field to score Hendricks (3-2). Addison Simonson scored off of Skylar Swatkowski's ground out to second (4-2). The Firebirds scored again from Clare Rettler's single to left field (5-2).
  • Leiah Cardona scored in the bottom of the fifth off of Hendrick's double to left field to force the Firebirds' lead 6-2. Hendrick scored right after to increase the Firebirds' lead (7-2).
  • The Firebirds advanced their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Hana Adler started the Firebirds off with a walk, followed by Rettler with a double to advance Adler to third. Kristina Chronos advanced Rettler and scored Adler with a ground out to second (8-2). Hristov singled to left field to score Rettler (9-2). Hernandez tripled to score Hristov (10-2) to end the game early in six innings and take the win from OWU.
GAME 2
  • Ithaca scored first in the bottom of the first (2-0).
  • In the bottom of the second, Ithaca added to their lead (3-0).
  • Ithaca advanced their lead to 5-0 in the third off of a single and a triple.
  • Ithaca scored in the bottom of the fourth to increase their lead 6-0 over the Firebirds.
  • The Firebirds had a big inning in the fifth. Adler started it off with a double to center field. Rettler singled to shortstop and scored Adler (6-1). The Firebirds dug into Ithaca's lead, scoring 3 more runs by Rettler, Hristov, and Hernandez (6-4). 
  • Ithaca scored off two singles, forcing the score to 7-4 and taking the win from the Firebirds. 
High Flyers
  • Maddie Conway added to her win record (4-1) in the circle. 
  • Hristov led the Firebirds in hits and runs with three on the day. 
  • The Firebirds collected 13 hits on the day.
