Men’s Basketball Topples No. 2 Illinois Wesleyan in Electric CCIW Home Battle

KENOSHA – The Carthage College men's basketball team picked up a hard-fought victory over No. 2 Illinois Wesleyan 85-74 for the regular season-sweep on Saturday afternoon. 

The Basics
  • Final Score: Carthage 85, Illinois Wesleyan 74
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Tarble Arena 
  • Records: Carthage 16-5 (10-2 CCIW), Illinois Wesleyan 18-4 (10-3 CCIW)

How it Happened
  • Carthage and Illinois Wesleyan went head-to-head against one another, battling to gain a lead over the other. 
  • The Firebirds gained a six-point lead after a layup from Ryan Johnson 14-8. 
  • The Titans followed with a five-point run to get within one, but a three-pointer from Griffin Daun kept the Firebirds in the lead 17-13
  • Both teams rallied back and forth to gain the advantage, holding each other within four before Illinois Wesleyan tied the score 25 with a three-pointer. 
  • Illinois Wesleyan gained a one-point advantage. The Firebirds tied the score and flipped it in their favor after two three-pointers from Riley Brooks, making it 36-35 with two minutes remaining. 
  • Carthage remained in the lead for the remainder of the first half, going into intermission up 40-38. 
  • The Firebirds started the second half off strong with a 7-0 run with shots from Ryan Johnson and Brooks. 
  • Illinois Wesleyan retaliated with a 5-0 run, trying to gain the advantage, but a three-pointer from Daun and a layup from Nemi Ostojic helped the Firebirds keep the margin at 57-48. 
  • An 11-0 run from the Firebirds continued to boost their lead with points made by Ryan Johnson, AJ Johnson, and Daun for a 78-66 score. 
  • Carthage sealed the game's fate with a steal and breakaway dunk by Daun with 21 seconds left to win the game 85-74. 


High Flyers
  • Riley Brooks led the team in points with 23, followed by Ryan Johnson with 18. 
  • AJ Johnson and Griffin Daun each had 15 points in the contest. 
  • AJ Johnson crossed 1,000 career points in the game, making him the 31st student-athlete to cross the milestone in program history.
