Firebirds Clinch Regular Season Championship with Win Over Elmhurst

KENOSHA – The Carthage College men's basketball team defeated Elmhurst on Wednesday night 83-71 earning the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) regular season title the first title since 2017.

How it Happened
  • Carthage opened the game with a 14-0 run with shots from Riley Brooks, AJ Johnson, Ryan Johnson, and Griffin Daun, gaining the Firebirds an advantage early in the first half. 
  • The Bluejays attempted to close the margin with a 5-0 run, but a three-pointer from Ryan Johnson continued their lead 19-6. 
  • Elmhurst again fought to lessen the deficit with a 7-2 run, but the Firebirds defense held firm and a jumper from AJ Williams brought them up 30-15. 
  • Both teams fought back and forth, but the Firebirds held the advantage against the Bluejays, ending the half 39-32.
  • The Firebirds opened the second half with a 7-2 run, keeping the margin against the Bluejays 46-34. 
  • Elmhurst continued to fight to advance the score, getting within eight after a jumper from Daun. 
  • Carthage retaliated with a jumper from AJ Johnson and a three-pointer from Colton Sigel, illuminating the Firebirds lead, 53-41. 
  • Back-to-back shots from AJ Williams and AJ Johnson furthered the Carthage lead 63-51, keeping a margin of 10 or more. 
  • The Firebirds worked their way to the free-throw line on six consecutive possessions to ensure the win 83-71.
