Women's Basketball Drops CCIW Battle with No. 16 Carroll

No. 16 Carroll (Wis.) 72, Carthage 60
KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage women's basketball team hosted the Carroll Pioneers in Tarble Arena on Saturday afternoon. It was a tough day for the Firebirds, as the Pioneers got off to a fast start on the offensive end and carried the momentum to victory.

Carroll kicked off the scoring with a Katie Barger jumper. The two teams traded points until the Pioneers went on a quick seven point scoring run. The run came to a halt when Grace Cord hit a layup off a Malia Green assist in the fifth minute of the quarter. It wasn't long before Carroll jumped out to a 9 point lead off another five point scoring run fueled by Katie Barger's two assists. Carthage fought back off two free throws from Malia Green.

Carroll started off the scoring off the same way they started the first with a Katie Barger driving layup. The two sides continued to battling defensively with each team working in the paint. Each team was held to under 15 points in the second quarter.

The second half started off with a scoring frenzy on both sides fueled by back to back three pointers from Natalie Gricius and Nora Ahram respectively. The Pioneers went on a quick back to back run but was quickly halted by Mallory Winters and Delaney Elsmore in the fifth minute. The Pioneers had a quick reply to the Firebirds with five points of their own to push their lead to 13. The Birds answered late in the quarter off a Mallory Winters buzzer beater layup to make the score 53-40 to end the third.

The Pioneers continued to extend their lead in the fourth quarter. Malia Green responded quickly with a three pointer of her own to make the score 57-43. Grace Cord hit a layup right back to give Carthage a four point scoring run. The fourth quarter was a back to back scoring battle through and through. Carthage was able to get within 10 in the last 30 seconds of the game from Malia Green's three pointer. However Carroll capitalized on a late foul to extend their lead to 12 to make the final score 72-60.
