Firebirds Battle Back, Fall in Nail-Biting Overtime Finish

KENOSHA — The Carthage College men's basketball team battled throughout a tight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin matchup on Wednesday night, falling 85-81 to Illinois Wesleyan inside Tarble Arena.

How it Happened
  • Riley Brooks converted a transition layup, followed by a jumper from Ryan Johnson, giving Carthage a 9-3 lead. Illinois Wesleyan responded with a run capped by a jumper to tie the game at 9-9 with just under sixteen minutes remaining in the first half.
  • Brooks knocked down a three from the right wing to make it 12-9, but Illinois Wesleyan answered with a three-pointer and two baskets to reclaim the lead.
  • AJ Johnson tied the score at 14 with a jumper, and Brooks added another fast-break three to push Carthage ahead 17-14.
  • The teams continued trading baskets, with Illinois Wesleyan tying it at 17 before Carthage regained a 27-26 advantage on a jumper by Ryan Johnson entering the final six minutes of the half.
  • Illinois Wesleyan briefly moved back ahead, but Brooks tied the game at 33 on free throws and hit a late jumper to send the teams into halftime tied 35-35.
  • Illinois Wesleyan opened the second half with a three-pointer, answered immediately by Antuan Nesbitt's jumper for Carthage.
  • The Titans added back-to-back threes to take a 41-37 lead. Carthage chipped away through a tip-in from Griffin Daun, drives to the basket from Brooks and Johnson, and a deep shot from Schlesinger, keeping the deficit to a single possession.
  • With 17 seconds remaining in regulation, Illinois Wesleyan held a two-point lead. After a missed front-end of a one-and-one, Chris Schlesinger grabbed the rebound and raced coast-to-coast, converting a layup at the buzzer to force overtime.
  • In overtime, Illinois Wesleyan took a two-point lead with a jumper at the 3:20 mark.
  • In the final two minutes, Brooks made free throws to pull Carthage within 84-81, but Illinois Wesleyan held on to win 85-81.

  • Riley Brooks led Carthage with 24 points and eight rebounds while shooting a perfect 8-for-8 at the line.
  • Antuan Nesbitt added 18 points, including three three-pointers.
  • Ryan Johnson posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
