KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage women's basketball team hosted the No. 25 Coe Kohawks in Tarble Arena on Tuesday evening. After a sluggish start offensively, the Firebirds used a dominant second quarter to take the lead and give the Kohawks their first loss of the season.

Caydee Kirkham would open the score for the Kohawks, who would continue on a hot start to take an early 8-0 lead. Mallory Winters would strike first for the Firebirds with a free throw. Carthage would start to crawl back late in the opening quarter but Coe would lead 16-10 as the first quarter ended. Malia Green led the Firebirds with four points in the quarter.

An 8-2 run, fueled by six points from Nora Ahram would tie the game at 18 early in the second quarter. Alyssa Orozco hit a jump shot to take the lead for the Firebirds 20-18 with 3:41 to play in the half. Carthage controlled the rest of the quarter, outshooting the Kohawks 17-9, and took a 27-25 lead into half. Winters and Ahram each finished with six points in the quarter, while Winters led the squad with seven points in the half.

Grace Cord got the scoring started in the third quarter with a layup to extend the lead to 29-25. The Kohawks responded with a layup of their own before the Firebirds offense took flight on a 7-0 run with points from Orozoco, Whitney Thompson, and Green. The Firebirds led 42-34 heading into the fourth quarter. Winters and Thompson each scored a team-high four points in the quarter.

Kelly Knight would hit a three to start the fourth quarter narrowing Carthage's lead to five, which is the closest the Kohawks would get to the lead for the rest of the contest. As Coe began to foul to manage the clock, the Firebirds went 7-10 from the free throw line to secure the 60-51 victory.
