NECC Week Two Recap – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (1-0) vs. Carroll University (0-1) [Division III – Midwest B]

Score: Carthage 2, Carroll 1

On Tuesday, Sept. 30, the Firebirds awaited CCIW rival Carroll University in the virtual fighting arena for a best-of-three Smash Bros crew battle. Carthage claimed a gutsy 2-1 series win, advancing them to 2-0 in Fall 2025 NECC competition in Division III – Midwest B. The expanded Smash Bros roster includes: senior captain Connor Grubisic (Spacefood), junior Alex Chuluunbat (ParaMedix), sophomore Shannon Pasters (MintMelee), and sophomore Rylee Preseton (Ender14).

Smash Bros Crew Battle Explanation: Crew Battles are a team-based competition where two teams of players face off in a series of one-on-one matches. The losing player is eliminated, and the winning player remains in the game, potentially facing a new opponent from the opposing team. The battle continues until one entire team has been eliminated. Each team has four players, each carrying three stocks, for a total of 12. For a best-of-three series, this process is repeated for each set.

Set One:
  • Chuluunbat (Bowser) opened strong, defeating Carroll player Sharkade (Robin) and taking two stocks from Carroll player Mystic (Ridley) before falling. Pasters (Banjo & Kazooie) then swept Carroll player Mystic, but were eliminated by AquaJohn (Little Mac). Grubisic (Samus) beat AquaJohn but fell to Mistilteinn (Wolf). With the score 3-2, Preston (Zero Suit Samus) nearly clutched it out, but Mistilteinn sealed Carroll's Set One win.

Set Two
  • Pasters and Grubisic both fell to Mystic (Byleth), giving the Pioneers an early 10-6 lead. Preston turned the momentum with wins over Mystic and Noctural (Yoshi), cutting it to 6-4. Mistilteinn eliminated Preston, but Chuluunbat carried Carthage, taking out both Mistilteinn and AquaJohn with a clutch ledgetrap finish, earning a narrow Set Two victory.

Set Three
  • Pasters opened with a win over Mistilteinn before falling to Sharkade. Grubisic then surged, eliminating Sharkade and AquaJohn to push Carthage ahead 7-3. Mystic responded, taking out Grubisic and Preston to close the gap. In the finale, Chuluunbat survived Mystic's pressure and landed a decisive up-tilt, giving Carthage the 2-1 series win.

NECC Week Two Recap – Rainbow Six Siege (0-1) vs. Alpena Community College (0-1) [Division IV - West Central B]

Score: Carthage 2, Alpena 0

On Wednesday, Oct. 1, Carthage R6, including sophomore captain Samuel Bergamo (Scorp), sophomore Chris Vallee (Typhoon), sophomore Major Andrews (AirMajor), junior Aurelio "Rey" Trejo (Paltry), and junior Jalyn Green (Astro), competed against the Alpena Community College (ACC) Lumberjacks in a best-of-three match.

Rainbow Six Siege Explanation: Rainbow Six Siege is a five-versus-five tactical shooter where teams alternate between attacking and defending bomb sites. Rounds can be won either by planting/defusing the bomb or eliminating the opposing team. Success relies heavily on precise gunplay, environmental destruction, and coordinated teamwork.

Map One (Clubhouse / 7-1 Victory): Carthage began their night on defense in Clubhouse. A combination of improved team coordination and accuracy led them to a 5-1 half. It was headlined by a phenomenal Round Two defense in the Armory/Church bomb site by Vallee, who secured two eliminations seconds before time expired. Additionally, Bergamo secured his first ace in Fall 2025 NECC in Round Four while the Firebirds were defending the second-floor Bedroom/Gym site.

Andrews helped the Firebirds in Round Five by securing the winning elimination near the central stairs going into Church. Before the half ended, Green prevailed in Round Six to secure three kills for Carthage to catapult them to a 5-1 half. Round Seven became a makeshift push by Carthage through Garage rafters as Vallee caught two ACC players off guard while using Montagne. This allowed a 4v1 situation to become reality and was used to set up a post-plant situation where Astro secured the winning kill. To end Map One, Round Eight became a fast and furious plant into the second-floor Gym. Andrews secured the opening kill and planted within a minute and a half. In a 5v4 post-plant, Carthage earned a flawless round and secured a Map One victory.

Map Two (Chalet / 8-6 Overtime Victory):

Following a great Map One win, the Firebirds went to Chalet and started on the attacking side. On attack, Carthage faced a 4-1 deficit after struggling to break through ACC's defensive strategies. A combination of lost gunfights and an inconsistent sense of time left in rounds. However, in Round Six, the Firebirds turned the tide thanks to a triple-kill from Bergamo and a plant into the second-floor Office by Green.

To begin Carthage's defensive half, Trejo was down to a 1v1 post-plant situation on the second floor Office/Piano Room. A standoff won with six seconds left in Round Seven. However, Trejo did not have adequate time to defuse the bomb, and Carthage fell 5-2 in the score. The Firebirds would win their next three defensive rounds to even the score 5-5. Andrews, Trejo, and Vallee secured a winning elimination across Rounds Eight, Nine, and 10, respectively. Match Point came after Bergamo obtained another triple-kill to win Round Eleven and make the score 6-5. However, ACC forced overtime after preventing Green from clutching a near 2v1 post-plant situation in the second-floor Office.

In Round 13 Overtime, Carthage defended the first-floor Kitchen and Dining Room bomb site. To overcome a strategic attack from ACC, Trejo obtained a double kill, while Vallee got three, including a winning kill above Dining Room. In Overtime Match Point, Bergamo stepped up once again with his third triple kill of the series, securing Carthage R6's first win of the season.

Score: Hoosiers Cream 4, Carthage 0

On Wednesday, Oct 1, Carthage White remained competitive despite a 4-0 loss to Indiana Hoosiers Cream. The team is comprised of senior captain TJ Buchmann (Blasecupid), sophomore Kaliek Wade (Akko), and freshman Jimmy Prims (ItsSlurp17).

Game One prompted a close 3-2 score. Despite Buchmann applying four of White's eight demos, it was not enough to halt Indiana. Wade secured the two goals scored, while Buchmann and Prims pitched in to assist those goals. Game Two was a narrow 2-1 loss despite Carthage White applying nine shots against Indiana's four. Wade scored the lone goal that Buchmann assisted. Wade secured three saves in an attempt to halt Hoosiers Cream. Game Three had the same score, but Prims scored the lone goal for White. Once again, Indiana precisely scored goals even though White applied eight shots worth of pressure. To end the series, White lost 3-2 in Game Four after a two-goal, four-save performance by Prims, attempting to keep his team alive.

Carthage White had more Demos (17-12) and Shots (31-26) than Indiana Hoosiers Cream in the wake of a 4-0 loss. Pressure was applied, but Indiana showcased great defense. Prims finished with three goals, one assist, 10 saves, 10 shots, and two demos. Wade followed with three goals, one assist, eight saves, 14 shots, and six demos. NECC Week Two Recap – League of Legends (1-0) vs. North Park University (0-1) [Division VII – West B]

Score: Carthage 2, North Park 1

Carthage League of Legends (LoL), comprised of senior captain Quentin Zeller (Wolfstrike), senior Gavin Johnson (Cahara), sophomore Owen Johnson (Owenthepotato), sophomore Katherine Reickmann (Firerose22), sophomore Michael Pankratz (Fuhzzee), and Ian Saner (Toothless), battled North Park on Thursday, Oct. 2, in an off-stream best-of-three series.

League of Legends Game Explanation: League of Legends (LoL) is a popular 5v5 MOBA game where two teams of players control champions to destroy the enemy nexus (base), by earning gold and experience to gain power. Players choose unique champions with different abilities to accomplish these goals. Unique champions help defeat minions, enemy champions, and destroy towers to control the map and secure victory.

Game One: Carthage fell short in a 36-minute opener. Zeller recorded a 9/6/8 KDA with a 209 creep score. Once again, the creep score indicates how many final hits a player earned against minions and jungle monsters. Gavin Johnson went 7/5/13 for a 203 creep score, while Owen Johnson went 8/9/11 for a team-leading 236 creep score. These offensive numbers infer the Firebirds had consistent farming during portions of the game. Saner (4/6/9) and Reickmann (1/12/14) accounted for key utility roles, but could not contain North Park's momentum. North Park player Doc McStuffin had the highest creep score, 248, and a KDA of 23/6/12. These high output numbers helped North Park overcome their CCIW rival. Despite strong farming efforts from Carthage, they came up short in Game One.

Game Two: The Firebirds bounced back in a major way to tie the series 1-1. Within 34 minutes, Carthage controlled the tempo through players such as Owen Johnson. Johnson secured a 257 creep score paired with a 9/6/11 statline, indicating his vital role in the team's ability to farm and win fights cleanly. Gavin Johnson secured a 225 creep score and a 10/2/8 stat line, while Pankratz complemented with a 6/2/18 stat line. Both players were valuable assets to teamfights and crowd control. Zeller went 7/4/12, helping his teammates with crowd and objective control. Lastly, Reickmann went 1/15/19, racking up assist totals by setting her squad up with openings to secure vital eliminations. Although North Park player Doc McStuffin accumulated a 309 creep score, the Firebirds mitigated any follow-up damage, and map control favored the opposition.

Game Three: To end the series, Carthage secured a win with great team coordination. Owen Johnson finished with a 14/6/6 stat line with a 227 creep score. Johnson's farming consistency was a massive key to the Firebirds staying in this series. Gavin Johnson went 6/4/17 with a 217 creep score. Zeller went 3/5/17 with a 152 creep score. Pankratz resembled his teammate by going 3/5/13. Lastly, Reickmann went 1/4/20, securing another high assist performance. The combination of teamwork and resilience led to Carthage coming back to win from a 0-1 deficit against North Park.

Player Comments (Katherine Reickmann): "In the first game, we lost bot lane pretty hard, and they [North Park] ran away with the game. In the next two games, we minimized losses and played the map better."

Fall 2025 NECC Season Player Stats Through Week Two – League of Legends

NECC Week Two Recap – Overwatch 2 Red vs. Cornell College (0-0) [Division IV – Central A]

Score: Carthage 3, Cornell College 0

Carthage Overwatch 2 Red faced Cornell College in a rescheduled, on-stream best-of-five series on Thursday, Oct. 2. Junior captain Mason Stenger (zXc), junior Joy Schultz (JumpyWizard), sophomore Billy Flanagan (ChickenFries), sophomore Deacon Kirvan (FerociousPig), and sophomore Adam Hollis (Hollister) earned a 3-0 victory.

Overwatch 2 Game Explanation: Overwatch 2 is a free-to-play, 5v5, team-based hero shooter where players pick a unique hero with distinct abilities and roles (Tank, Damage, or Support) to complete specific objectives-based game modes (Control, Escort, Hybrid, Push, Flashpoint). The core gameplay involves a team-focused brawl, where cooperation and strategy are essential to win.

Map One (Lijang Tower / 2-0 Control Win): To open the evening, Carthage comfortably got themselves a 2-0 win in the Control game mode, which centers around teams attempting to capture a point from zero to 100% in a best-of-three format. Since the Firebirds captured the point twice within three rounds, a victory was achieved. Kirvan, playing as a Tank, went 10/1/0 with 6,497 damage. The DPSs Flanagan and Stenger combined for 11,123 damage and went 16/0/1 and 8/1/3, respectively. Rounding things out, Hollis and Schultz provided 8,263 combined healing. A fast and balanced approach that caught Cornell College off guard early and often.

Map Two (Watchpoint: Gibraltar / 1-0 Escort Win): To continue their relentless pursuit, the Firebirds shut down Cornell College in the Escort game mode. This mode requires the attacking team to push a payload through multiple checkpoints, while defenders attempt to halt its movement. Carthage started on defense and forced Cornell to remain scoreless at zero, but allowed 77.25 meters of traction. On attack, Carthage would rush the Payload and push it past 77.25 to earn a 1-0 win. Kirvan topped out with 12 eliminations, no deaths, 5,450 damage inflicted, and 7,124 damage mitigated. Flanagan and Stenger would combine for 8,641 damage and finished with respective KDA's of 8/1/2 and 7/0/2. Hollis and Schultz combined for 5,532 healing.

Map Three (King's Row / 5-4 Hybrid OT Win): After two dormant maps, Cornell College woke itself up and secured four points on its attacking possession of hybrid. This game mode requires the attacking side to capture an objective to unlock a payload, then cruise it past multiple checkpoints. Defenders must halt capture and/or payload movement. After Cornell's four points, Carthage began its attack, claiming the payload quickly. The Firebirds used excellent teamwork and coordination to win 5-4. Flanangan, while playing as Tracer, launched a Pulse Bomb to help take out three Cornell defenders to secure the win as Carthage pushed the payload past its final checkpoint. Kirvan finished 49/17/10, accounted for 70% of team eliminations, and had 18,700 damage inflicted with 9,462 damage mitigated. Flanagan and Stenger combined for nearly 19,000 damage with respective KDA's of 48/0/10 and 36/0/11. Hollis and Schultz accounted for nearly 24,000 healing and contributed to eliminations as well.
