Strong Start Comes Up Short for Women's Volleyball Against Elmhurst

Elmhurst 3, Carthage 2 (14-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-10)
ELMHURST, Ill. – The Carthage women's volleyball team fell in a five-set heartbreaker to Elmhurst on Friday night inside R.A. Faganel Hall. The Firebirds jumped out to a two-set lead but couldn't hold off a late Bluejay rally, dropping the match 3-2 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play.

Carthage opened strong, dominating the first two frames behind efficient offense and sharp serving. The Firebirds hit .400 in the first set and .310 in the second while holding Elmhurst below .100 in both. Senior Kristina Manojlovic led the charge early with several key kills, while setter Ava Dettwiler kept the offense balanced. A pair of service aces from Manojlovic and solid back-row defense from libero Jenna Damon helped Carthage claim the opening sets 25-14 and 25-18.

Elmhurst found its rhythm in the third, improving to a .182 hitting percentage to cut the deficit with a 25-19 win. The Bluejays then edged out a tight fourth set, 25-23, to even the match. In the decisive fifth, Elmhurst's momentum carried through as the hosts jumped ahead 9-3 and held off a late Firebird push to win 15-10.

"Tough CCIW loss on the road," said Head Coach Leanne Ulmer. "After taking the first two sets we struggled with some tough serves from  Elmhurst and didn't play a very clean set. We came back strong in the 4th up 23-20 but couldn't close it out. Got behind early in 5 and made a valiant effort to comeback but too little too late. Off for the weekend then back at it next week to push to get better!"

The Firebirds (17-10) return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 28 against UChicago in Chicago, Ill. at 6:30 p.m. Carthage women's volleyball returns to Tarble Arena on Saturday, Nov. 1 as the Firebirds will celebrate Senior Night against North Park at 6 p.m. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
