How it Happened
  • After a scoreless opening quarter, Carthage broke through midway through the second as Bryce Frank capped a 15-play, 88-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 6-0.
  • The senior running back struck again minutes later, bursting free for a 52-yard score that extended the Firebirds' lead to 13-0.
  • WashU responded before halftime, trimming the deficit to 13-7 on a 17-yard touchdown pass.
  • The Bears then took their first lead of the game in the fourth quarter with a pair of scores — a four-yard rushing touchdown and a two-yard pass — to go ahead 20-13.
  • Carthage answered dramatically, as quarterback Easton Heafner engineered a 65-yard drive in the final minutes, finding Dylan Salisbury on a 14-yard touchdown strike with 31 seconds left.
  • Mugdim Kreho's extra point tied the game at 20, forcing overtime.
  • In the first overtime session, Kreho drilled a field goal to briefly give Carthage a 23-20 edge, but WashU countered with a 38-yard kick of its own to force a second overtime.
  • The Bears then punched in a 3-yard touchdown and added a successful two-point conversion to go ahead 31-23.
  • With four downs to play with, the WashU defense stood tall forcing an incomplete pass on the final play to win.
