Firebirds Earn Split at Carthage Triangular

KENOSHA, Wis. - The No. 25 Carthage women's volleyball team hosted the Carthage Triangular in Tarble Arena on Tuesday evening. The Firebirds starting the night against the third-ranked team in the country, the Wis-Oshkosh Titans, before finishing off the event with a game against the Edgewood Eagles.



VS No. 3 WIS-OSHKOSH

Oshkosh came out strong in the opening frame, using an early run to build a 15-9 advantage. Carthage fought back behind kills from Ava Dettwiler and Kristina Manojlovic, but the Titans closed out the set 25-18 behind a .308 hitting percentage.

The second set proved to be the closest of the night, with the Firebirds erasing a 20-15 deficit to tie the score late. Dettwiler and Madilyn Danielson fueled the rally, while Jenna Damon added key digs to extend points. Ultimately, Oshkosh edged out a 27-25 win with back-to-back kills.


In the third, Carthage again kept things close, trailing just 17-16 after kills from Katie Boston and Hailey Wierzgac. The Titans answered with a decisive 6-1 spurt to pull away, securing the sweep with a 25-19 finish.


VS EDGEWOOD

Carthage set the tone early in the opening set, racing out to a 9-3 lead with kills from Manojlovic and Danielson, coupled with three service aces from Damon and Kyla McTeague. The Firebirds controlled the pace throughout, using four blocks in the frame to claim a 25-17 win.

The second set was Carthage's most dominant, as the Firebirds hit .333 as a team and registered 15 kills. Katie Boston and Danielson powered the attack, while Damon added back-to-back aces during a 7-1 run that stretched the lead to 19-10. Emma Crow's kill on set point capped a 25-14 victory.


Edgewood responded in the third, capitalizing on late Carthage miscues to extend the match. The Eagles erased a 23-21 Firebird lead and closed on a 5-1 run to steal the frame, 26-24.


Carthage regrouped in the fourth, with Manojlovic and Danielson combining for nine kills to push the Firebirds ahead 20-15. Hailey Wierzgac and Dettwiler sealed the match at the net, with Dettwiler assisting on back-to-back kills before Crow put down the final point in a 25-20 decision.

The Firebirds (11-5) return to action on Friday, Oct. 3 as the squad competes in the Pointer Invitational at Wis-Stevens Point in Stevens Point, Wis. The Invitational will feature Carthage, Wis-Stevens Point, Augsburg, and Wis-Eau Claire. Carthage women's volleyball returns to Tarble Arena on Wednesday, Oct. 8 as the Firebirds host Illinois Wesleyan at 7 p.m. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
