Firebirds Take North Park to the Wire but Fall on Last-Second Free Throw

KENOSHA – Returning to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action after the New Year, the Carthage College men's basketball team fell short of beating North Park 69-68 Saturday evening.

How it Happened
  • Riley Brooks gave Carthage a quick two-point lead early in the first half.
  • North Park countered with a 14-4 run, taking a 22-14 lead with under 10 minutes to go in the half.
  • AJ Johnson's two free throws brought Carthage within three, but the Vikings responded with a layup to stretch their lead back to eight.
  • Griffin Daun's two free throws cut the margin to one, but North Park carried a seven-point advantage into halftime.
  • Early in the second half, AJ Williams drained a three-pointer to trim the Viking advantage to two, followed by Ryan Johnson's layup to tie the game at 46.
  • North Park regained momentum with a 9-2 run, extending their lead to 55-48.
  • Carthage battled back, narrowing the gap to two with a pair of free throws from AJ Williams at the 4:20 mark.
  • Ryan Johnson's dunk and two free throws from AJ Johnson evened the score at 66 with two minutes remaining.
  • After North Park hit a jumper, AJ Williams responded with a layup to tie the game at 68 with 16 seconds left.
  • In the final moments, North Park drew a foul with one second on the clock and sank one free throw, sealing a 69-68 victory for the visitors.


High Flyers
  • Riley Brooks led the Firebirds in scoring with 19, AJ Johnson followed closely with 18 points and went 10-for-11 from the free throw line. 
  • Ryan Johnson posted his third double-double of the season finishing with 10 points and rebounds.
