Carthage Fights Hard but Falls in Five-Set Heartbreaker Against No. 3 Stevens

KENOSHA — The No. 8 Carthage College men's volleyball team battled back forcing a fifth set but fell to No. 3 Stevens 3-2 Friday night. 

The Basics
  • Final Score: Stevens 3 - Carthage 2 (24-26, 21-25, 25-22, 25-15, 10-15)

How it Happened
  • Carthage opened the match with a 3-0 lead, fueled by early defensive blocks from Ryan Cholewinski and Ben Heise
  • Stevens responded with a 4-1 run, cutting the deficit to one after a kill by Koby Sherman. 
  • Carthage regained momentum behind a kill from Owen Otto and a block by Hudson Sweitzer, extending their lead to 11-6. However, Stevens fought back, tying the set at 13 after consecutive kills from Sherman. 
  • The teams traded points before Stevens capitalized on a late service ace and back-to-back kills to edge out a 26-24 win.  
  • The second set saw a back-and-forth battle early on, with Ruben Emmerich and Otto contributing key kills to keep Carthage within striking distance. 
  • Stevens pulled ahead 14-10 after a kill, forcing a Carthage timeout. 
  • The Firebirds rallied behind Heise and Otto, trimming the deficit to 21-19. 
  • Despite their late push, Stevens maintained control, closing the set 25-21 after a decisive kill.  
  • Determined to stay in the match, Carthage started strong with a kill from Owen Hendricks and a block from Sweitzer to take a 6-3 lead. 
  • Stevens responded with a 6-2 run to move ahead by one. 
  • Carthage countered with a key ace by Otto, sparking a 7-1 surge that put them in control by six. 
  • The Firebirds maintained control, with Heise and Otto closing out the set 25-15.  
  • Carthage carried its momentum into the fourth set, jumping to an 8-3 lead following a kill from Sweitzer. 
  • The Ducks cut the lead to 10-8, but Carthage answered with a 7-2 run, highlighted by kills from Hendricks and Cholewinski. 
  • The Firebirds continued their dominant play, securing the set 25-15 after Otto's final kill forced a decisive fifth set.  
  • The visitors opened the final set with a 7-4 lead after capitalizing on Carthage attack errors. 
  • The Firebirds responded with back-to-back blocks from Cholewinski and Otto, narrowing the gap to 8-7. However, the Ducks regained control with a late push, extending their lead to 13-10. 
  • Carthage fought off match point once, but a final kill sealed the set 15-10, giving Stevens the 3-2 victory.
