Firebirds Perfect at the Line in Home Victory Over Cardinals

KENOSHA - The Carthage College men's basketball team used a big second half to defeat North Central (Ill.) for their fifth conference win of the season.

How it Happened
  • AJ Johnson opened the game with a three-pointer, giving Carthage a 13-10 lead.
  • North Central (Ill.) responded, maintaining a slim lead of no more than four points for much of the first half, until Riley Brooks sank a three-pointer to put the Firebirds ahead 36-34 with 3:14 remaining.
  • Nate Montgomery's layup just before halftime narrowed the Cardinals' lead to 43-42.
  • North Central extended their advantage to four with a pair of free throws to start the second half.
  • Ryan Johnson tied the game at 57 with two free throws, igniting a dominant stretch where the Firebirds scored 29 of the next 42 points, turning the score to 86-70.
  • Griffin Daun's three-point play extended the Firebirds' lead to 19, as Carthage secured the 93-78 victory.

High Flyers
  • All five Carthage College starters recorded double-digit points: AJ Johnson (22), Griffin Daun (18), Riley Brooks (14), Ryan Johnson (14), and AJ Williams (11).
  • Brooks led the Firebirds on the boards with a game-high 11 rebounds, a new season and career best.
  • The 18 points for Daun was a season-high while AJ Johnson was one assist short of his season-best finishing with six. 
  • Colton Sigel provided a spark off the bench with eight points.
  • The Firebirds showcased precision at the free-throw line, going a flawless 20-for-20 as a team.
