KENOSHA- The Carthage College women's basketball team returned to Tarble Arena on Saturday afternoon to face off against the Millikin University Big Blue. The Firebirds engaged in a competitive performance, ultimately succumbing to their visiting foes at the end of regulation.

1st Quarter:

Carthage and Millikin traded baskets back and forth throughout the first five minutes of the opening quarter, never exceeding a one-point difference.
The Firebirds defense fought on, but a three-pointer from Millikin set them ahead by five with three minutes remaining.
A three-pointer from Emma Thistle lessened the Firebird's deficit with 18 seconds left to be down three 15-12.
A final second three-pointer from Millikin left the score 18-12 going into the second period.

2nd Quarter:

Malia Green and Marianna Morrissey led back-to-back baskets to leave the Firebirds just three points short of the Big Blue 19-16.
Three-pointers from Green and Thistle added to the Carthage score, giving the Firebirds the lead for the first time since the 5:21 mark in the first quarter.
A three-pointer from Grace Cord with nine seconds left in the half extended the Firebirds lead to 32-28 to end the half.

3rd Quarter:

Carthage battled against the Milikin offense, but after a 7-0 run, the Big Blue flipped the score in their favor with a 37-32 lead halfway through the third period.
The Firebirds went on a 6-2 run with baskets from Alyssa Orozco and Morrissey to get within one with 2:36 left in the period.
Both teams rallied against the other, but Carthage fell short to end the period 42-38.

4th Quarter:

A lone free throw from Grace Wamser and a set of free throws from Morrissey helped the Firebirds get within one point of Millikin two minutes into the final period.
A three-pointer from Orozco put the Firebirds back in front of the Big Blue with the score at 44-42 with 7:07 left to play.
As both teams scrambled for the lead, a 7-4 run for the Big Blue left the score tied 48-48.
Carthage fought to gain the lead with free throws from Orozco and Thistle, which put the Firebirds up 52-50.
Millikin managed to flip the score with a three-pointer and a set of free throws, claiming the victory with the final score posting at 55-52.

Morrissey led the Firebirds in points, accumulating 12 throughout the game. The senior finished with two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Thistle registered 11 points throughout the game, along with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

The Firebirds (11-3, 3-2 CCIW) will head to Bloomington, Ill. on January 15 to face off against Illinois Wesleyan University at 7 PM. Carthage women's basketball returns to Tarble Arena on January 25 at 2 p.m. against Augustana (Ill.) For more information visit, athletics.carthage.edu.
