No. 8 Firebirds Blaze Past Lakeland and St. Norbert with Back-to-Back Sweeps to Open 2025

KENOSHA — To start the 2025 season, the No. 8 Carthage College men's volleyball team defeated Lakeland and St. Norbert 3-0 on Friday. 

The Basics
Game One 
  • Final Score: Carthage 3 - Lakeland 0 (25-21, 25-9, 25-15)
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Tarble Arena
  • Records: No. 8 Carthage 1-0, Lakeland 0-1 
Game Two
  • Final Score: Carthage 3 - St. Norbert 0 (25-16, 25-15, 27-25) 
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin- Tarble Arena 
  • Records: No. 8 Carthage 2-0, St. Norbert 0-1
How it Happened
Game One
  • The two teams battled each other point-for-point, trying to gain the advantage over the other. Neither team surpassed the other by more than one point. After a defensive error from Lakeland, the Firebirds were able to score two straight points, gaining the lead 13-10. 
  • Both teams traded back and forth for points for the remainder of the set until a kill from Ben Heise took the set 25-21. 
  • A kill from Owen Otto off the first serve jumpstarted a 7-1 run with points from Hudson Sweitzer and Owen Hendricks to give the Firebirds a strong advantage. 
  • Carthage continued their runoff Muskie attack errors and kills from Otto, Heise, Hendricks, Sweitzer, Michael Yemm, and Adrian Maciejewski to lead 18-3. 
  • Lakeland managed to gain a small run. However, the Firebirds held onto their lead, taking the set 25-9. 
  • An ace from Ryan Morey landed the Firebirds on the board first. 
  • Lakeland's offense rallied to catch up to the Firebirds with a 5-0 run, but Carthage held onto the lead 16-10
  • After an 8-3 run, the Firebirds won the set 25-15. 

Game Two
  • The Firebirds came in with a 4-0 run to get things started with pairs of kills from both Hendricks and Ruben Emmerich
  • Carthage extended a 13-7 run with points from Otto, Heise, and Hendricks to lead in the first set 17-7. 
  • The Firebirds defense held strong to take the set 25-16.
  • Both teams traded point-for-point, never exceeding the other by more than four points at the beginning of the set. 
  • A kill from Ryan Cholewinski kickstarted an 11-3 run with points from Hudson Sweitzer, Justin Ische, Heise, Hendricks, and Emmerich, lifting the Firebirds into the lead, 21-11. 
  • After a service ace from Joe Kolwicz, the Firebirds took the set 25-15
  • The Green Knights and Firebirds exchanged back and forth for points throughout the entirety of the set until a kill from Cholewinski and an attack error won Carthage the set 27-25. 

High Flyers
  • Throughout today's doubleheader, Owen Hendricks tallied 21 kills, leading the team. 
  • Owen Otto led the team with 18 kills, followed closely by Ben Heise with 15.
  • Joe Kolwicz accumulated 34 assists throughout both games, leading the team in assists, followed by Ryan Morey with 29.

  • The Firebirds will head to sunny Santa Cruz, California, to participate in the UC Santa Cruz "Slug Slam" Tournament. They will take on New Paltz on January 17th at 2 PM PST.
