Firebirds Soar in Epic Five-Set Comeback Against North Central (Ill.)

KENOSHA  — The Carthage College women's volleyball team picked up a 3-2 reverse sweep over North Central (Ill.) to earn their second straight conference win at home. 

The Basics

How it Happened
  • Carthage took an early two-point lead in the first set with a kill from Ella Pettinger.
  • After North Central (Ill.) went up by three, Carthage tied the score at 12 with a kill from Carel and a combined block from Carel and Pettinger.
  • The Cardinals maintained control of the set until a kill from Kaitie Rohe and a combined block from Devinn Bell and Katie Boston tied the score at 21.
  • Katie Boston's kill tied the set at 23, but the visitors secured the set with a final kill, 25-23.
  • In the second set, Carthage jumped to a 6-4 lead with a kill from Kristina Manojlovic.
  • Tied at 15, North Central (Ill.) took a two-point advantage following an attack error and kill, prompting a Firebirds timeout.
  • Both teams exchanged points, but the Cardinals moved ahead 24-21 with two consecutive kills and secured the set with a block.
  • In the third set, Carel's kill put Carthage up by two.
  • North Central (Ill.) closed within two, but a service error gave the Firebirds an 18-15 lead.
  • A Cardinals attack error extended Carthage's lead to 20-16, forcing a visitor's timeout.
  • Following the timeout, a solo block from Boston helped Carthage maintain a 22-18 advantage.
  • Carthage forced a fourth set with a kill from Carel, sealing it 25-21.
  • Carrying momentum into the fourth, Carthage took control with a kill from Carel and an ace by Cassidy Stahl, leading 16-13.
  • The duo of Manojlovic and Pettinger combined for a block, extending the lead to five points.
  • North Central (Ill.) rallied to tie the score at 21 with consecutive kills.
  • Out of a timeout, Manojlovic led the team to set point.
  • The Cardinals started strong in the fifth set, leading 4-1.
  • After a timeout, Carthage tied the score at four following an attack error.
  • The teams continued to battle until a kill from Carel put the Firebirds ahead 10-9.
  • In a hard-fought conclusion, kills from Manojlovic and Pettinger clinched the match for Carthage, 18-16.

High Flyers
  • Three Firebirds recorded double-digit kills: Liv Carel led with 19, followed by Kaitie Rohe with 18, and Kristina Manojlovic with 16.
  • Devinn Bell posted a season and career-high 56 assists, while Jenna Damon, Bell, and Manojlovic each tallied double-digit digs, finishing with 28, 14, and 13, respectively.
  • The Firebird offense hit a match-best .314 in set five with 13 kills and two errors.

  • Carthage will be back on the court next week as they will travel to participate in the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Triangular on Tuesday, October 1.
  • The Firebirds face Edgewood at 6 p.m. then take on host No. 5 Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 8 p.m.
