Second Half Offense Propels Firebirds to 4-1 Start

KALAMAZOO - The Carthage women's soccer team traveled to Michigan to match up against the Kalamazoo Hornets on Saturday afternoon. After a scoreless first half, the Firebirds and the Hornets traded goals through the second half, leading to a road victory for the Carthage squad.

How it Happened 
 
  • The two sides put on a defensive show in the first half, keeping the game scoreless through the opening 45 minutes of play.
  • Addie Saarenas put the Firebirds on the board with a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute with an unassisted goal.
  • The Hornets leveled the score at 1-1 in the 73rd minute with a goal from Lucy Cripe.
  • Maggie Thom broke the tie in the 83rd minute with the game-winning goal to give the Firebirds a 2-1 lead late in the match.

High Flyers
  • Saarenas scored her first goal of the season and the first of her career.
  • Thom scored her first goal of the season and the fourth goal of her career.
  • Goalkeeper Ainsley Stallworth made three saves on four shots faced.
