Firebirds Battle Warhawks in Regular Season Finale

Wis-Whitewater 8, Carthage 2
Wis-Whitewater 3, Carthage 0

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage softball team took on the Whitewater Warhawks in a two-game home series on Sunday afternoon. The Warhawks took an early lead in game one and held on for the victory, before coming away with a win in a defensive battle to take the doubleheader sweep.

How it Happened

GAME 1

The Warhawks started out the first inning strong, capitalizing on errors and walks to gain momentum to put up five runs and jump out to a 5-0 lead.

After a few stagnant innings, UW-Whitewater picked up one more run in the top of the 4th to extend the lead to 6-0

Izzy Hernandez grabbed the first RBI of the game for the Firebirds in the bottom of the fifth, driving in Clare Rettler who reached base on a bunt single. Whitewater now led 6-1.

In the top of the 6th, Rettler fired a dart to the plate from left field to throw out a runner, prevent a run from scoring, and earn the third out of the inning.

Gwen Hendrick placed the ball up the middle to drive another run in to make the score 6-2 in the bottom of the 6th.

In the top of the 7th, Whitewater picked up two more runs. The Firebirds did not score in the 7th. The final score was 8-2 Warhawks.

Olivia Hristov was handed the loss and fell to 6-5 this season.

GAME 2

Both sides were held hitless through the first three innings of the second game.

The Warhawks found both the hit column and run column in the top of the fifth, as an RBI single brought home the first run of the game.

A two-RBI triple would extend the Warhawks lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning, which would be enough to earn the win.

Maddie Conway was dealt the loss after pitching seven innings and earning a pair of strikeouts.

High Flyers

  • Conway threw 13.0 innings in today's doubleheader, earning six strikeouts on an impressive 247 pitches.
  • Rettler went 5-7 with a run scored.
  • Hendrick went 2-3 in game one with an RBI.
