Millikin 21, Carthage 6
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Carthage softball team competed against the Millikin Big Blue in the opening round of the CCIW tournament on Thursday afternoon at Illinois Wesleyan University. After a quick offensive start, the Firebirds fell behind as the Big Blue advanced to the second round of the tournament.


 

• Izzy Hernandez hit a double down the third base line to score Clare Rettler in the top of the first to give the Firebirds a 1-0 lead.
• The Big Blue responded with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning to jump ahead 7-1.
• In the top of the second inning, Gwen Hendrick hit a single up the middle to score Rylee Johnson and Abby Wierzbicki, cutting the deficit to 7-3.
• Kelly Gaiser grounded out to shortstop, allowing Rettler to score.
• Seven more runs came across to score for Millikin in the bottom of the second.
• The Big Blue scored three more runs in the third and four runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 21-4.
• In the top of the fifth, Wierzbicki walked to bring home Hernandez.
• Johnson grounded out to the pitcher, allowing Maddie Conway to score.

 

• Rettler went 1-1 with a pair of walks and 2 runs scored.
• Hendrick went 1-2 with a walk and 2 RBIs.
• Johnson went 2-3 with a run and an RBI.
